There are a few good reasons that I don’t like Mary Washington Hospitol. I am not going to go there as I wouldn’t want to be accused of slander or something, but there are a few I will state for the record.

For starters, my wife got thrown off a horse while we were visiting F berg today.(She is doing ok and will be fine, but admitted for observation) She was knocked cold for a few minutes as well as the way she was thrown was bad enough to be a real life threat. After following the ambulance in and proceeding to enter there were two signs. No smoking on Mary Washington Property and no guns even if they are permit regulated. Never seen that wording before, but makes me think of gun owner regulated.

Regardless, even though I support private property rights especially because we have the right not to do business with such places, this is something of a different monster because the choice could be the differance between life and death all in itself. It is almost like saying in order for your family member or loved one to have a chance; you must give up your right to protection. Its bad enough you are upset and nervous and cant smoke:cuss:, but you have to risk your life to make sure someone else is safe in which they know you will do. I wonder if someone got hurt or killed because they could not protect themselves if they could be sued because it was a non choice forced situation.

I didn’t get out of there till about 9:30, long abandon hallways than out side to where I was lost and had to wander around with my son, to find the car. I couldn’t have run if I would have needed to as I pulled a muscle in my leg rushing to my wife. Sorry but there are some real jewels that hang around the ER at night, and a few sitting in the shadows didn’t make things any better.

They have security guards in the most populated places armed with what looked like hand cuffs, didn’t know they would stop a bullet of knife. :banghead:

Well any way this is the story and I am interested in seeing what some have to say.

Yeah....I've ignored the MWH signs....they can go get bent. Their "security" is a joke. I was carrying when my son was taken to the ER..and when my wife was delivering son #2. Who is responsible for my (and my family's) safety? Me.

How "private" is the property of a public university, which UMW is?

(again, I'll use this opportunity to push to have state agencies added to preemption)

Glad to hear your wife is ok :)

I completely agree...has anyone spoken to VCDL about it?

Moving state preemption onto state agencies is always a big issue. There were a few folks currently in the GA or campaigning to get elected who were at the Tea Party Convention who made noise about understanding the matter and indicating some level of support. The big answer will be revealed by the deadline for filing bills for the upcoming 2011 session.

stay safe.

Putting this as a separate response to kennys' question/dilemma.

As a rather vocal supporter of the notion that folks ought to respect the right of a private propertry owner to create whatever rules they want that do not run afoul of the law as that is written, this is a difficult issue.

Given that kennys was brought to be at the hospital by force rather than by choice, I guess I'd have encouraged him to comply with the property owner's request as soon as he could possibly do so. And I guess that would have been as soon as he had located his wfe in the ER, met with the medical staff to ascertain her condition and need for continuing medical care, dealt with the admission and financial obligation issues that must be completed to prevent one from having a bandaid slapped on their booboo and tossed back out into the street, etc., etc.

Of course I would also have encouraged kennys to get the phone numbers for the security staff so he could contact them to meet him in the parking lot on any return visits, and ensure that they provided him with an escort from the lot through the building to where his wife was being cared for.

Yep! That's probably how I would have suggested he deal with the situation.

Glad he didn't call me to ask for any guidance. Hope to hear everybody is as close to well as they can be,

stay safe.

OT a little bit...

Common misconception. Mary Washington Hospital is unaffiliated with the University of Mary Washington.

Thanks. Would not have known that
Just to fill in the blanks... :)

Mary Ball Washington was the mother of George. She lived in Fredericksburg for the last 18 years of her life, close to her daughter, George's younger sister, Betty Washington Lewis.

The name of "Mary Washington" is common to this area, including a memorial that is a much smaller version of the famous Washington Monument in DC, that marks her grave, on Washington Avenue in a neighborhood just outside of the Historic District of Fredericksburg.

Wife is doing better hopefully to be out of there tomorrow, thanks for the good wishes.

Under the circumstances I forgot about the new hospital. Than again the rescue squad didn't seem to make that an option even though it was not that much further away.

I am not that pleased with the 911 dispatchers, or the rescue squad any way for various reasons, but thats another subject all together.

When visiting today I took notice of some really strange things I wish not to mention here, but if security would have been worth any thing which in most cases they seldom are I wonder where they were at.

I have mentioned in other threads the false sense of security some private property owners project, and I will say I believe this is one of those cases. They did have many guards, and some were off on their own, but in some instances they were flocked in groups in off the wall places far away form obvious danger zones. None that I had seen were armed even the smallest can of mace. Hand cuffs a few flashlights and radios and even one empty what looked like a pepper spray pouch.

Even adding insult to injury signs that point out not responsible for missing cell phones or personal property, and they will tell you its because these things can walk off. Is it employees, is it outsiders, is it other patients visitors, is it just limited to theft? If there is enough time to go into a room and steal someones personal property, what Else is there enough time for.

Seems they take the smoking thing serious to in their eyes save lives, so much so that they not only have signs saying no smoking on the property, but as well walking off the property onto adjoining areas to smoke is considered as trespass and is against the law....

I'm sorry I have seen people that live to their 90's that have smoked, and yes some do die younger from smoking. Now think of those that had no means to protect themselves that have died allot younger or more abrupt than smokers, even those that have watched family members die or are raped at the hands of others. I guess they didn't get the fact that the ones they think they save by their smoking policy they are actually putting in harms way by their no gun policy.

If I am going to die, and every one at some time or another does, I would rather die by my own vices with freedom and choice, rather than because of the ignorant rules of some.

I see your point and thats an idea, but I would almost worried that if something happened because they are not even prepared to defend themselves let alone any one Else that they would throw me to the proverbial wolves so they could get away.

That and asking them to go out of their way to do their jobs would be like going into an auto parts store and asking for blinker fluid, or spark plugs for your F250 desile.

Kenny -

As much as I advocate for private property rights, my comments needeed to be taken with a few grains of salt and toungue planted firmly in cheek. Sorry there was no smiley for that. On the other hand, looking at the situatio literally also exposes the sick humor.

By the way, I have about three gallons of blinker fluid that is about to go out-of-date. Let me know if you could use some. I've found this lot makes my turn signals much more noticable than any other blinker fluid I've bought - folks even pull up even with my driver's-side window and tell me how they've been watching my blinker for several miles, and then go into quite some detail on how much they admire them.

stay safe.

Actualy I thought it was an interesting thought to make them go out of their way. On a protection stand point however there would be no gain. That and the chances of them doing so would be less than you actualy having some blinker fluid:lol:...
