First of all this is not a polictical statement nor do I want it to become a debate over 1100.

So today I went into Costco. I was stopped "yes off 1100" Guy. He was pushing their pamlets into everyones hands. He wouldn't let me walk by without taking one stating "Read it and get the facts"

So I glanced at it, and then at the sign. I had recently bought some Cuervo last week so I thought their prices were high as they quoted on the sign. And I asked about them. The guy got real huffy and stated that it was in the pamlet read it you'll understand.

Well the heck with that. I pulled out the cell and call my local store. Sure enough the Costco prices were inflated by about $5ea. The guy demands to know who i'm talking to. When I hung up I showed him the notes I had taken. Straight from the liquor store, would you like me to call um back so you can confirm it? He instead caalled a manager. when the manager got within sight he russhed over and started wispering to him, and panomiming a telephone call. and pointed at their sign.

The manager comes over without a word attempts to take me by the elbow and tells me I have to leave. I took my elbow away from him and told him not to touch me again. I asked why I was being led away. He stated that I was free to have my own opinions but that they didn't need me coming in debating them in their own store and that I was to leave.

I asked was this because I had proven their sign was incorrect?

"Essentially yes, it is, have a good day sir, please do not return to our store."

"So I am being forced to leave for pointing out you are using false advertising in your political agenda?

"Yes, now goodbye."

And that is after your agent wouldn't let me enter til he engaged me about the topic and pushed your paperwork at me?

"I didn't see that, we are just trying to make our point to benefit Washington residents"

"Could you provide me with a copy of the entrance tape where you took me by the elbow and turned me towards the door without my permission? You obviously did not have my permission to touch me or turn me or lead me."

"no you'd have to talk to a front end manager and you are not to enter our store again goodbye"

The manager stopped by the greeter and pointed me out then walked back inside.

So there you have it, if you disagree with Costco

Escorted from Costco

I am sure I marked this OT. Since we of OC have already had such a difficult time with Costco, I thought I would post another example of their "Our way or Get Out mentality" I thought I was clear in the title that it was OT. Since it deals with Wa I would have liked it to stay there.

Here in Washington we have on the ballot, initiative 1100 which essentially shuts down the state run liquor stores and allows grocery and convenience stores to obtain licences to sell hard alcohol.

Costco is the primary backer of the init. They want to be able to sell cases of hard alcohol. They're primary slogan is that they will get the STATE out of the liq business. Which isn't going to happen anyways, cause alcohol is still a federally controlled. i.e. A.T.F.

So their ad campaign inflates Washington's current prices and shows California's wholesale prices. I pointed out that they had inflated the Washington prices to show a greater margin. And now after calling down to california I can also say that they are showing the whole sale price in californinia, NOT the retail price. All in an effort to show a bigger price gap.

Costco couldn't pull it off by themselves so they enlisted the grocery chains for support, so that the init would allow grocers and convenience stores to sell hard alcohol also.

That was what I pointed out to them AFTER their employee wouldn't let me pass and was pushing the pamlets at me at every turn. It got down to harrassment of me. Which is why I have taken it to Costco corporate and Washington Attorney Generals office this afternoon.

what is this 1100 thing?

A good idea for Washington, despite the OP's misgivings.

It disbands our current state-run liquor monopoly and replaces it with a private system. No more "oh crap, I decided to work till 8pm on Sunday and was supposed to grab some liquor for my friend's party, but the liquor stores are closed." No more "the middle tier distributors don't want to carry that particular item because it's too boutique, so even though my local store would order it, they can't get it." No more state-inflated prices (yes, the prices are generally very inflated in the state run liquor stores. There are, from time to time, deals, but it's way worse than any state I've been to with private sales). It was put forth by Costco, and anyone who doesn't like the above problems or the idea of what is fundamentally a private enterprise being state run should vote for it.

As evidence of the disparity in price and availability, compare these two lists:
http://liq.wa.gov/HomepageServices/brandsearch.asp (in the drop down choose whisky-scotch and then "find product")
http://www.hitimewine.net/istar.asp?a=3&dept=01&class=01&sortby=&numperpage=999&pos=0

The first is the state selection, the second is a SINGLE STORE I used to shop at when I was in Costa Mesa, CA. Most bottles are around $6 more expensive in WA, and these are *retail* prices from CA (buying by the case, at places like costco, or becoming friends with your local liquor store owner often led to cheaper prices).

That's not to mention the sparsity of liquor stores here, the very few that are open sundays, etc.

1100 would be a massive improvement for the state.

Somewhere over run with mud(s)
from what I am looking at it is 4$ CHEAPER for "aberfeldy 10yr 750ml" AFTER TAXES.

How exactly does that contribute to being "overpriced?"

Should we just turn liqour into a social program and give it away free based on color of skin or number of kids?

How cheap do you expect something to be when there are AT LEAST 4-5 hands in the pot?

Distiller, importer, first tier distributor, second tier distributor, third tier distributer....

Uh, if you were using the site I linked... The aberfeldy offered in WA is 12 and 21 yr only. The first bottle on hi-time is a 10 year signatory bottle. It's the second bottle that is comparable, if you're using Aberfeldy 12 year:

WA price: 40.98 + tax
CA price: 36.99 + tax

Doing other bottles (stuff I actually drink, all prices before tax):
Glenfiddich 15 solera:
WA: 46.58
CA: 32.99

Cabo Wabo Reposado:
WA: 30.81
CA: 27.99

Bombay Sapphire 1.75L:
WA: 40.13
CA: 28.89

Bushmills:
WA: 20.02
CA: 15.99

And a couple where WA is cheaper (than this particular retailer):
Russian Standard:
WA: 14.21
CA: 15.99

10 cane:
WA: 22.51
CA: 25.99

Overall, the privatized system is better prices, better selection, better availability, and better politics.

*edit* Also, the WA tiered distributors are eliminated by this bill. It's why the counter bill (1105) was put forward by the distributor monopoly that wanted to keep their state-provided teat.
*edit 2* And remember that these are prices from a single vendor, so there are different prices or deals one can find.

Meh.

It's their store. If you don't like what they sell or for how much, or if they ask you to leave, then leave. No point in arguing.

On 1100 some cities are coming out against it, as they say it will directly effect the funding as in Police and Fire in the local communities.

Please elaborate. Is it not going to be taxed anymore?

No I am not saying that it will no longer be taxed, I am just putting out there that what is being said about passing 1100 and 1105 and the effects that may happen.

Initiatives 1100 and 1105 would privatize liquor sales in the Washington… and implode city budgets across the state, including our own.

“If you’re going to vote for an initiative it seems to me you need to be aware that if it takes away a dedicated revenue source, that dedicated impact is going to be felt," say Zais.

Call it a scare tactic but Yakima insists if the initiatives pass, our 2.3-million dollar deficit becomes a 3.6 million dollar deficit and the cuts go deeper.

TRI-CITIES -- It's a battle over booze. Two initiatives on the ballot would end state-run liquor stores and let private companies sell spirits instead.
You've seen the ads now Action News is pulling the numbers to see if the claims add up.

Booze brings in big bucks for the state. Washington not only controls the distribution and sale of hard liquor, but it also is one of just nine states where you can only buy from a state-owned or contract store. But two initiatives on the ballot threaten to take it all away.

Liquor is heavily taxed in Washington -- you pay more for a bottle of booze than in any other state. Initiatives 1100 and 1105 would make it so any place that now sells beer and wine could get a license to sell liquor.

Opponents have been all over TV trying to convince voters that it's a public safety issue. So Action News looked into the claims.

Both initiatives would cut out a big chunk of revenue from the state at a time when it’s already in the red.

Liquor Initiatives I-1100 and I-1105

I know many stores are really hitting this hard and the opposition is the State which is not in the business of putting out ads to maintain it.

I wish I had the answers on this but I do not.

I buy booze at Costco in Hawaii and I can get the 1.75 litre bottle as I can for a 750 ml bottle of Bombay Saphire gin for almost the same price as our state run liquor stores and I noticed it is the thing for the hard liquors.

Hawaii has high taxes and everything pretty much costs more than here, hmmm but liquor is cheaper? Got go with doing away with the state monopoly myself.

so Costco is a bunch of dicks... don't shop there... isn't that a solution?

I told my woman that we will not shop there anymore. She asked me why not? ....I talk about OCDO all the time at home. I thought that by all the yells and hoops and hollars I do when I read OCDO somebody would listen to me! She asked me why not? :banghead::banghead::banghead: Nobody listens to what I say.

I wrote an English paper on 1100 and 1105, funding wouldn't be dramatically affected from what I found. The general fund would take not even a 1.5% hit. It wouldn't be a problem at all if Gregoire didn't spend like a Hollywood celebrity with a credit card that has no limit.
