Is kentucky REALLY as OC friendly as you say?

Hi folks!

Yes, this is Joe from "COMMIEfornia." (Geographically, NOT politically!) Good news! After our second visit to your great state, we purchased a home there, and will be moving OUT of this Cesspool of Socialism and back to AMERICA by the end of March, 2011.

We visited last November, and just this last September. Now we will settle into the town of Franklin, south of Bowling Green.

While I was there, I looked for OC'ers and CC'ers. I saw NO examples of either. (Yes, if you study someone long enough, you'll see them 'print') So I have to ask ... If I move there, and decide to strap my Glock 27 onto my waist, and OC in a hard plastic holster, and walk around town ... NOT to be "bad a*s", NOT to boost my self-esteem, and NOT to intimidate, but simply to enjoy the FREEDOM that CANNOT be experienced here in The Land of Fruits and Nuts, it is really true that no one would care?!

How would people receive me? "Some nut with a gun?" or would they TRULY not care?

I have to tell you that my first excursion into the free world with a sidearm will be exciting! Not unlike the first time I drove my car on a new license at age 16 without an adult in the car! It didn't matter where I was going. It only mattered that I was TRUSTED with a car!

You have to understand CommieFornia. If i were in a 7-11 store, and reached into my pocket to pull out some change for a candy bar,and a single bullet just happened to fall out onto the floor and be seen by some uber-liberal, the S.W.A.T. team would be called out, helicopters would circle the area, local schools would be evacuated and T.V. news crews would assemble behind the "safe zone" established by the local sheriff's deputies. NO JOKE! Did you know that if I were found walking down a street with a magazine in my pocket, with ONE bullet loaded in it, the prosecutor would charge me with carrying a CONCEALED WEAPON!?! EVEN IF I didn't have a firearm anywhere on or near my person!

So you see why i would be a bit nervous at first. I have 38 years of "training" to expect some knee-jerk reaction, rather than a sensible, down-to-Earth greeting from a fellow American citizen!

Relax

Relax and go about your business and you should be okay. Now I'm not saying that you won't eventually have to deal with some idiot or an idiot LEO but on the whole you should be fine. If you do have the inevitable LEO encounter remain calm and stand on your rights.

This is not a stop and identify state so carry sterile unless of course you are driving then be sure to either have your weapon IN PLAIN SIGHT ie. on the dashboard or the passenger seat. A handgun is not concidered to be concealed if it is in the glovebox ( not the console or doorpocket) and yes it can be fully loaded.

If you are ever pulled over they will probably ask if you have any weapons or drugs again STAND ON YOUR RIGHTS, you do not have to answer any questions that are not relevent to the traffic stop so DON"T and NEVER,EVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH!!!!

I know you are used to being treated like a Jew in 1938 Germany but things here are much more laid back not to say there aren't any JBT cops here but on the whole the LEO seem to understand that they are public servants and are usually courteous and polite.

I hope this helps and even though it is a bit pre-mature, WELCOME TO AMERICA, LAND OF THE FREE!!!!

Please define "carry sterile."

Also, in the event of a traffic stop, would the pistol simply stay laying next to/near me on the seat, presumably visible to the LEO? Should it be fully out of the holster, or should I remove the holster from my belt and leave the pistol snapped into it?

Does the sight of a pistol in a car (on the seat, on the dash, or a rifle on a rack) give a LEO "probable cause" to search my vehicle? Would I have to allow him to "run the gun" (serial number) to see if I actually own it?

These may seem like stupid questions, but if you ever lived in CommieFornia, you'd understand my hesitation and ... well ... FEAR!

Sterile = no ID on you

Easiest thing is to put it in the glovebox, out of sight out of mind. If it has to be in the seat I suggest the weapon be holstered (that's what I do any way) The presence of a gun does not give them probable cause for a search. You would not have to allow them to seize your gun. NEVER EVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH. Kentucky has a statute that says the government is not allowed to dis-arm you and we don't have a "registry system " anyway so it would be a moot point (not saying they wouldn't possibly ask thou reply with just say " I don't consent to any searches but I will not resist").

Last but not least, the only stupid questions are the ones that do not get asked ;0)

Yes! If stopped here, just leave the gun lying ont he seat beside you or in the glovebox, wherever it's lying with the blue lights go on, LEAVE IT THERE! Do NOT touch, reach for, or attempt to move it; the officer may see this as he's pulling you and it could give him mlore cause to be on "alert"!

Additionally, IF the sidearm is lying on the passenger seat and the blue lights go on behind you, come to a stop slowly! This is because IF you stop too quickly, the weapon might slide off the seat and into the floor, an LEO might conclude that it was lying there and you were trying to conceal it even though you weren't! I've heard of this happening sometime back.

Years ago, I used to have a shoulder rig ont he passenger seat and I'd keep my sidearm in it so that if I were pulled and happened to stop a bit suddenly, my sidearm wouldn't slide off the seat and end up on the floor.

Here's an ever worse scenario! You're gun's on the passeneger seat, someone pulls out in front of you while driving causing you to hit the brakes HARD! Being wrapped up in the effort to not wreck and such, you fail to realize that you sidearm has now slid to the floor. Then being that the moron cut you off and didn't even make any sign of being sorry, you get mad and speed up to pass because this guy cut you off and then proceeds to slow poke. This sudden forward kinetic motion forces the sidearm to slide backwards and under the passenger seat. The cop you accidentally blew by takes note and decides to pull you. Now wrapped up in this new situation, you fail to notice your weapon out of sight but of course the LEO doesn't fail to see it and thus, you're now looking at a possible wreckless driving and an ILLEGAL CONCEALED WEAPONS charge. This of course is if you DO NOT have you're CCDW.

Keep in mind, you have to be a resident of Kentucky and over 21 before you can obtain your CCDW though.

Happy OC'ing here! :)

I feel you, friend. I'm from Chicago, and it's not a whole lot better than Commiefornia in Illinois. It's kinda like comparing being burned at the stake to drowning-- either way, you're screwed and it sucks.

I've been here for six months now, and have finally become accustomed to my freedoms. I'm getting into a CCDW class, but have OCed for the past six months with very little incident.

No LEO problems so far, although the sherrif himself smiled and nodded to me when he saw me carrying.

I've had a couple of jerks hassle me, but I believe only two-- and for every jerk who causes problems, and for every business that tries to kick you out, there are ten people you'll educate by answering their many questions.

Which is worth noting-- be ABSOLUTELY prepared to POLITELY respond to all manner of silly questions. "Are you a cop?" "Is that a real gun?" "Is that legal?" "Have you ever shot someone?" "Are you going to rob this place?" Seriously, be prepared.

Also, I advocate this no matter what, and I can NOT stress it enough...

Do NOT open carry, unless you are 100% confident that you can defend your gun while it is in your holster.

If someone attacks you, dives for your holster while the gun is sleeping and you don't have time to draw, you need to know how to fight the attacker off. If you don't, I would advise that you learn before you OC, or wait until you can CC. When no one knows you have a gun, it's not a concern unless the attacker somehow finds out, but when OCing, any attacker bold enough to target you will be going for that weapon, and he'll probably get the jump on you.

Anywho, KY is definately a fantastic gun-friendly state. I'm glad to welcome to back to America, and I hope you enjoy the God-given freedoms from which you have been wrongfully deprived.

I hadn't thought about that. Some guy attacking me FOR my weapon. Hmmm... Well, I'm not "Rambo," but I am 6'0", 250 lb. and am not at all squeamish about gouging someone's eye out with a ball point pen if necessary, or impaling their forehead (or throat) onto the tip of a decorative wrought iron fence to neutralize their aggression. I'm not a "street fighter" though. Not that if backed into a corner, I wouldn't have a smile on my face as I went up against my opponent with a claw hammer or a machete in my hand, but I don't have ANY of the skills one would normally associate with a common fistfight. I DO know where to land a punch to create a lot of pain in an individual, but I guess maybe BECAUSE of my size, I haven't EVER found myself in a physical fistfight.

Psychology goes a long way in controlling a situation like that. I attended a black high school in Los Angeles. Even in a situation where I was pinned in the locker room surrounded by a sea of "afros,"I was able to avoid any physical altercation by reminding the aggressor that unless he was willing to kill me right then and there, at some point ... "Maybe not today ... maybe not tomorrow ... but soon ..." he'd be seeing me again, and "next time, you're homie friends will be nowhere in sight!"

It was 1974 when, one day, my car was up on jack stands in my high school Auto Shop. I was installing new brakes, so all four wheels were off of the car. I carry my keys clipped to a belt loop. So "Leon" walks up behind me, grabs my keys and does the typical "I got your keys, homie!" dance, backward toward my car. I calmly held out my hand and said, "You REALLY don't want to do this Leon. Give 'em back NOW." He tossed them to a friend who, along with four others, piled into my car and locked the doors. They started the engine and were racing the motor, turning on the wipers and such.

I tapped on the glass, "Funny guys, now let me get back to my work. Get out." No way. They were sure they were in control, and I had about 300 other students who gathered from the P.E. field and the welding shop watching to see what I would do. Mr. Card, the teacher was nowhere to be found, and the school "narcs" who watch for a gathering of this type were at the other end of the campus, dealing with another situation. Inglewood High School was a BIG campus with 3,500 students.

I always carry a spare keys in my wallet in case I am locked out. They held the door lock down so I couldn't open the door. So I opened the trunk instead. There in the trunk was a large loading strap, the 2" wide strap with the ratcheting mechanism. I used it as a tow strap when friend's cars would break down, and stuff like that.

I tossed one end of the strap over the car's roof, and then rolled up the length. I threw it under the car to the driver's side. I didn't want to get under the car with five clowns rocking it around. On the driver's side, I assembled the strap, and tightened it against both doors until the roof buckled. They stopped laughing.

Then I walked over to the shop door and grabbed a 5-gallon can of gasoline. After popping the funnel, I gave Leon my best, "I'm gonna burn you alive!" look, and began to carefully pour the gasoline all across the rear trunk, rear window, roof, and hood. I also poured the gas in a circle around the car, all the while staring at the guys inside.

Matthew was a smoker, so I kept my eyes locked on Leon, and reached back to Matt. He handed me his Bic lighter. I held it up like the statue of liberty, and lit it.

It was a Kodak moment! Their eyes opened WIDE! "Get out da' car! Get out da' ****in' car! He gonna light us up!"

The car rocked around as they (stupidly) thrust against the doors that would not open. The car fell off of the jack stands and landed on the brake drums. As I walked ever-so-slowly toward the car, (s-l-o-w-l-y I turned, step ... by ... step ... inch... by ... inch ...) one of them finally got the idea that they could roll down the windows and pour out onto the ground. They evacuated my car like a nest of roaches from an old space heater sprayed with RAID.

I turned off the lighter, grabbed the water hose and hosed down the car and the ground to get rid of the gasoline, and removed the load strap. Mr. Card FINALLY appeared. "What just happened here?!" Two narcs came running in from Manchester Avenue. (One thing about inner city ghetto types, if you don't "rat" on them, they'll respect you) "Mr. Card. Some of the guys were asking me about the brake job I was doing. A few of them leaned against the car and it fell off of the jack stands. It knocked over the gas can, so they suggested I hose down the area to prevent a fire..." He bought it.

A moment later I walked past Leon. I looked him square in the eye and said, "Spread the word. Don't EVER **** with my car." From that day on, I could leave the doors unlocked, the windows open and whatever. NO ONE messed with my 65 Plymouth Belvedere! LOL! Chester walked up to me one day. "What's this I hear ... word is, you're the 'Crazy White Boy' on campus. What'd I miss?!?"

When I handed the lighter back to Matt, he said, "Would you have done it?" I just raised an eyebrow "Spock" style and walked away. I wanted to leave that question unanswered, even among my friends.

I was working for a food wholesaler after school and on weekends, and earning GOOD money. YES, I could have afforded to burn my car to the ground without much concern. I didn't want to go to prison for an illegal bar-b-que though.

I DO know that in the world of "BIG GUYS" I'm NOT one of them. There are some freakin' MONSTERS roaming around out there! I have no delusions about being able to take on one large guy, or several small guys with only my fists as my weapons. I usually have something else available, and of course, all you need to do is look around. There are 'weapons' all around you. If I were to OC a firearm, I'd most likely have something else on me that I could rely on to even the score.

However, you bring up a very VALID concern that I had not previously considered!

I don't think anyone has told you yet but welcome to the state of Ky. I hope you love living here as much as the rest of us do and hope you enjoy the same rights and freedoms as all the other people living in Kentucky.

Yes! I want to participate in the Kentucky OC events!

Here in CommieFornia, it is risky during an OC event, because all you have to do is step one foot across some imaginary line where a cop thinks you have entered into the force field known as the "1,000 foot school zone" that is NOT marked in any way and suddenly you are a felon! It doesn't matter that there could be three streets between you and the school, and no way in HECK you could know there is a school over there on the other side of the Wal-Mart, but that doesn't matter to the commie-nazi-revenue-whores of CommieFornia!

They know when and where the OC events will occur, because we have to tell them in advance, so they don't "waste valuable resources" responding to frantic "Man With a GUN!" calls from whiny feel-good liberals climbing into their Prius's to race to their pilate classes.

CommieFornia liberals fight very hard to keep 626.9 in the penal code, because it makes it EASY for them to forbid someone from legally carrying a gun in any practical manner. Virtually ANY place where ONE OR MORE children are "taught" ANYTHING, it is deemed a "school!"

Case in point: Here is a photo from a neighborhood near me. The circles are drawn in a 1,000 foot radius from every "school" in the area. Now tell me how ANYONE can legally transport a gun or OC in this area?!

Check out this code!

Ocing

Welcome again to the State of Kentucky. I moved here from Wisconsin four years ago and I just love it here. LEO are pretty up to date with Ocing. I have work with some due to the nature of my job and I have a nephew on the force. They pretty much understand and want harass you if you are carrying a gun out in the open. My Nephew put it like this to me. "crooks don't carry in the open only citizens who are aimed to protect themselves and their love ones".

He works for LMPD? I have cousin who is on the Metro force and when I asked her (while she was at Academy no less) what the training was for LOC encounters she told me quite pointedly and in a drone voice (stood the hair up on the back of my neck!!) "Shoot'em in the head" and "you can't just carry a gun".

Was she being serious or joking? If she was being serious then that's scary!

If that's truly her sentiment and plan of action, I fear for her safety. If someone starts shooting at me--whether LEO or civilian--I'm shooting back. If she's making those outrageous statements, I imagine she's hard to reason with.
