Firefighters thought the sprinkler system had handled the fire, which is why there was another flare up that occured much later than the inital fire.
Roseville Galleria gets about 9 million shoppers a year. Hundreds of employees are now out of work. The estimated damages and losses are already in the tens of millions of dollars. The man arrested is also a suspect in two other fires in Sacramento County including one at a Wal-Mart garden center just a few days prior to yesterday's events.
This is a hug hit to our local economy.
ROSEVILLE — 10:20 a.m. - Officials received a call of a fire inside the Roseville Galleria Mall. Police found that a suspect had barricaded himself inside of the GameStop.
11:30 a.m. - The entire mall was evacuated. People were told to stay away from the area.
12 p.m. - After a standoff, police took the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Alexander Piggee, into custody. At this time, the fire was still active, but there wasn't much smoke coming from the mall.
1:45 p.m. - Huge plumes of smoke began shooting out of the mall at an alarming rate. Fire crews tackled the flames from every possible angle.
3:30 p.m. - Flames and black plumes began dying down.
5 p.m. - The fire is still active.
