Timeline:

ROSEVILLE — 10:20 a.m. - Officials received a call of a fire inside the Roseville Galleria Mall. Police found that a suspect had barricaded himself inside of the GameStop.

11:30 a.m. - The entire mall was evacuated. People were told to stay away from the area.

12 p.m. - After a standoff, police took the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Alexander Piggee, into custody. At this time, the fire was still active, but there wasn't much smoke coming from the mall.

1:45 p.m. - Huge plumes of smoke began shooting out of the mall at an alarming rate. Fire crews tackled the flames from every possible angle.

3:30 p.m. - Flames and black plumes began dying down.

5 p.m. - The fire is still active.

He told employees to leave the store and that he had a gun. No gun has yet been found. Police are also unsure as to what accelerants may have been used. The backpack he was carrying is still buried under debris. Below is a link to an aerial video with other related vids as well.

Firefighters thought the sprinkler system had handled the fire, which is why there was another flare up that occured much later than the inital fire.

Roseville Galleria gets about 9 million shoppers a year. Hundreds of employees are now out of work. The estimated damages and losses are already in the tens of millions of dollars. The man arrested is also a suspect in two other fires in Sacramento County including one at a Wal-Mart garden center just a few days prior to yesterday's events.

This is a hug hit to our local economy.

Was the "firearm" from a Nintendo?

Was he trying to get on the waiting list for a new game, or trying to get the latest version of Combat Toads?

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly (and least in jest) -- why did the mall go up SO QUICKLY? Was an accelerant used? Was fire code not followed in the construction of the mall?

Did the mall not have any sort of fire suppression system in place?

Regardless, with a last name like that his entry into the penal system will be a true Deliverance.

Actually authorities are not releasing any information about the sprinkler system. We know they were activated. What is being kept secret is whether they failed or were prematurely ordered shut off.....either way a flare up happened that caused the fire to destroy even more property.

Which means the city will pay the management company to clean-up, rebuild, re-inspect, and re-rent the damaged property, along with losses. Your Tax Dollars At Work. :banghead:

I'm pretty sure it was as well. Considering out area's rate of unemployment(12% or higher), there are already hundreds of people standing in lines to help clean-up, stores are trying to relocate employees to other stores in the area and undamaged stores may be able to open up in about a week.

This fire is a bit of a catch 22. While hundreds of jobs were temporarily lost hundreds more have been created just for clean-up and rebuilding. The oldest part of the mall was targeted and damaged. New wings were just completed last year that added an additional 100+ stores to the community.

The kid(23) is facing 5 felony charges, and the arraignment has been postponed a week so the family can provide a lawyer for Mr. Piggee.
