Victor Decker was a good man, and a great police officer. He was found murdered on October 26th.

The fundraiser for Victor Decker will be Tuesday, November 16th, at Scotty Quixx on Granby Street. 10% of sales will be going to his family. They will also have donation boxes at the door of every restaurant and bar on Granby Street, and all donations will be given to his family.

(IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT) Victor Decker Memorial Fund:In Vic Decker's memory, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office has established the officer Victor Decker Memorial Fund to assist his wife and newborn daughter. Donations may be made to any Towne Bank branch in the name of "Officer Victor Decker Memorial Fund." Donations may also be mailed to the Officer Victor Decker Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 3236 Norfolk, Va. 23514

What made him a great man and police officer? People get murdered everyday. What makes him different and worthy of a donation?

The reason I'm asking is there are a lot of people looking for donations, many are worthy most are not that outstanding.

Well let me answer that question for you.

For starters, he was Norfolk's Top Cop in 2009 and won the department's Medal of Valor after a shootout with 2 armed robbers in downtown Norfolk, resulting in 1 of them dead.

Not that that matters to many people, because an award doesn't say much about the man. I met him downtown multiple times. My girlfriend worked at Scotty Quixx for a long time and knew him very well. I had to chance to hang out with him a few times, and we actually talked about open carry one night, and I was surprised at how much he knew about it and how he agreed with it, given the history of other Norfolk cops.

From the few times I hung out with him, it was apparent that he was a stand up guy and really dedicated to his work. I saw him dealing with the drunks all the time and he always tried to reason with them and talk down the problems before taking any serious action.

All of the employees in downtown Norfolk knew him on one level or another. He always offered to escort people to their cars and called cabs for people who weren't in any condition to drive.

Anyways, people can draw whatever conclusions they want and decide to donate if they wish, I just wanted to spread the word to help his wife and baby daughter. Thanks for reading.

I don't really know him personally but I did go to school with him and he was the brother-in-law of one of my good buddies. From my understanding he was a stand-up gentleman with a good head on his shoulders. He probably was not an angel but from my experience/interactions, worthy of some praise and admiration for his work. Don't know the circumstances of his death but I will make a donation because in a distant sense, I know the guy and his family.

You don't need to justify him to me DA....I was just asking. I need to make a few contributions this week and always like to know.

FWIW, pinning awards and medals on a cop doesn't make a good one. But...

Im not trying to justify anything to you, just pointing out what I know to be true. Honestly, if I was you, I wouldn't donate for him because you have no interaction/connection with him and couldn't donate to every cop that was killed in the state. Just wanted to throw in my $.02 on the subject and re-affirm that he was a honest, stand up fella, even if he was a Norfolk cop.

I wouldn't donate to every cop in the state. First, it's rare one is murdered, second, it's rare anyone has anything substantial to say about them.

Very few things I donate to have any connection to me. The Roanoke case has no connection to me but I am donating and supporting.
I have no connection or interaction with starving children, whale research or disabled Veterans, but manage a little help.

Though I never personally met him, we exchanged a few emails and i've seen him working in Norfolk. When he Got in the shootout last year, Stopping a p.o.s who had just murdered an innocent man on Granby, WTKR did a typical "Trigger happy white cop kills poor black man" story and i got into a debate with the "reporter" over it. I exchanged Emails with Decker to let him know that at least one citizen had his back. By all accounts he was a hero and a stand up guy.

I know i'm new around here, and many of you have had "negative" interactions w/LE. If there's one complaint I have w/ this forum it it the "all cops are bad" mentality. They are human too. The majority are doing thier level best to keep us safe, they sometimes make mistakes, so do we.

It should go without saying that negative situations with a few LEOs should not be used to categorize all others similarly.

I am responsible for my own safety and security.

The problem that many here have with LEO (especially Norfolk LEOs) is that they think that by harassing, arresting and/or disarming open carriers they are making things safer.

Most cops respect my rights. Those I do not disparage. Afew have a Napoleon complex, those I avoid. still fewer have a God complex and actively take away our rights. Those should be assaulted with formal complaints and lawsuits, with the lasting effect being termination.
