Saw the news report on Fox 4. I would like to say thank you and great job. I wish I would have known about you sooner. I am interested in attending meetings and have several questions about structure and rule of law. Again Thank you for standing up for our rights.

also I live in Independence MO, are there any considerations to open carry there. What if you are approached by any P.D. are they understanding? What about walking into say price chopper to pick up dinner? are they gonna have an issue. How do I tell who is OC friendly.

I live in Independence as well! Welcome aboard! It is legal to OC in Independence, Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Liberty, Kansas City...as well as other surrounding cities.

When you OC you may well have an encounter with LE. I would simply encourage you to just keep doing what you're doing..which is asking questions. However, get in the habit now of doing your own homework with respect to learning the laws and ordinances with regard to OC in whichever city you may carrying in. Your own personal research will pay huge dividends to you. By and large the LE you will encounter will be professional and respectful of your right to carry. We should extend that same professionalism and respect to them in return.

As far as which business's are OC "friendly"...the general rule of thumb is IF they do NOT have the "Gun Buster" signage prominately displayed at their entrance or close by (similar to the Ghost Buster sign) you can "generally" assume that the business allows open carry. However, having said that....IF the owner/Manager of the business approaches you and asks you to take your weapon out the building, for whatever reason, you're required to do so no questions asked.....until you come back in and discuss it with the manager! hahaha!

We are beginning to have our "meet n greet" meetings on the first saturday of the month. Time and location perhaps will vary....but just keep in contact through your participation here and you will be kept in the loop.

Again...welcome aboard...and we all will look forward to meeting you in the near future!

Hey kcemt, welcome to the forum! I live in Lee's Summit and open carry often in Independence. Independence does not have an ordinance prohibiting OC, so essentially any venue that does not have a "no guns" sign or state/fed laws prohibiting guns in that venue (federal buildings and the like) are OC legal. Friendliness depends on the staff and management, that does tend to vary. I personally haven't had any issue in a price chopper, or independence for that matter (other than the mall).

As for police officers, most of the LEOs I've encountered have been inquisitive, but generally understanding. We all have our own way of dealing with that situation, but personally I believe it is best to remain respectful, explain what OC is, and let the officer know -you- know the law. There are many helpful threads on the national side of the forum about these situations, as well as many threads on the Missouri side that go over experiences and how one should handle ones-self when confronted by LEOs. This would be a good question to bring up at the next meeting and get some in person responses.

Also, in relation to what randy said, we are more than happy to answer any other questions you may have and help you out with concerns. That said, our responses are not absolute. What I mean by that is, you should always research the law and -know- it for yourself that way there is no misunderstanding and no legal issues arise from bad advice (not that we would give you bad advice on purpose :D). With -that- said, if you ever need help finding law sources, city ordinances, proof and evidence of advice, we are here to help and link, so just ask.

Any other questions?

Welcome kcemt2000.
Glad you found OCDO, better late than never. LOL. I'm sure you will find a wealth of information and wisdom here. Ask all the questions you want. You will find that the members will gladly try to answer them with thoughtful info. or links and lots of commonsense. Also, jump right in to any and all threads or start a new one with whatever is on your mind. Don't be bashful. We all learn about so many different issues and ideas by reading and joining in. This is a GREAT forum to socialize with like minded Patriots and interested or curious onlookers.
One other note; CAUTION! we also have the occasional roaming or hit & run TROLL.

[Roaming Troll] One who replies to a thread repeatly on any number of forum boards in a devisive or confrontational manner lookin for a fight and to get us riled.
[hit & run Troll] One who replies to a thread on any number of forum boards in a devisive or confrontational manner lookin for a fight and simply PISS us OFF and then run away and just watch the reactions to get his/her JOLLIES OFF.

We are open and willing to discuss any issue with others as long as they do so with FACTS instead of just anti-rhetoric.
Once again WELCOME. JT and Donna Clifton

I want to commend you guys on your professionalism in the way you all handle yourself on the Channel 4 spot. Great job!!

I am new to the forum, as well, and have all the questions and want to know all the right information that any newby would have.

Would it be possible that one of you guys could start a "sticky thread" with links to the laws and ordinances for Missouri and our local city governments. I know I would appreicate it!!

Thanks again for getting the word out!!

Hey and welcome mopars, glad to see so many more OCers joining because of the news bit. As for the sticky thread its a pretty good idea, though I don't know if anyone has taken the time to compile such a link list. There exists a map for regional areas color coded to OC friendly and not, but I don't have the copy. It would probably be easier just to ask about a specific town or county when you're interested and I'm sure other OCers in that area can link you or fill you in. If there is such a list of links and ordinances, I'm out of the loop on that and I'm sure someone will link it.

Many but by no means all municipal ordinances can be found here: http://www.municode.com/library/library.aspx

You'll find it a very useful reference worth bookmarking. As just one example, the ordinances of North Kansas City do prohibit open or any other carry without a city-issued permit. http://library3.municode.com/default-now/home.htm?infobase=16014&doc_action=whatsnew and scroll down to Title 9.44.010 which says:

9.44.010 Carrying weapons of any kind.
A. The carrying of firearms by any person not a member of the armed forces of the United States, or of the state, county, or city law enforcement bodies, is prohibited unless such person has a special permit to carry such firearms, which permit shall be issued by the city clerk after the application therefor shall have been passed upon by the city council and the permit has been signed by the mayor and city clerk.
B. All persons having a special police permit shall be allowed to carry firearms when they are engaged in their duty of guarding the premises of their employer's place of business, but no person shall carry such firearms when not on his or her employer's property. Such firearms shall be left on the employer's premises when such person finishes work each day.
C. No person shall in the city wear or carry under his or her clothes or conceal upon or about his person a dangerous or deadly weapon of any kind or description, or shall go into any church or place where people have assembled for religious worship, or into any schoolroom or place where people are assembled for educational, political, literary or social purposes, or to any election precinct on any election day, or into any courtroom during the sitting of court, or into any other public assemblage of persons met for any lawful purpose, other than for militia drill, or meetings called under militia law of this state, having upon or about his or her person, concealed or exposed, any kind of firearm, pistol, revolver, shotgun, rifle, Bowie knife, springback knife, razor, metal knucks, nunchakus, billy club, sword, cane, dirk, dagger, slingshot, B-B gun, pellet gun or other similar deadly weapons, or display in a menacing or threatening manner any simulated or artificial weapon or thing having the appearance of a weapon as described hereinabove.

The portions of that ordinance prohibiting concealed firearms are superseded for those with a valid CCW permit by RSMo 21.750, the firearms preemption statute, but the prohibition regarding weapons other than firearms or openly carried firearms remain valid.

welcome kcemt2000 and MoparsB4me to OCDO and the fight in Missouri for preemption.

there is a lot of good info here, and the folks are pretty nice too.

a couple of members have compiled lists of cities where OC is and is not legal per city ordinance. but since we are not lawyers it is best for you to do your own research into the subject for your own peace of mind. i will however give you a few of the links that i use for just such research.

an older OC legal/not legal listing done by ComSec i believe. i know a more recent one was done by Sohighlyunlikely but i can't seem to find it at this time.
http://www.natesit.com/oc/mooc.htm

Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 571
http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/c571.htm

the next two links are to third party websites that host ordinances from many cities and municipalities throughout the the state. if you can't find a town listed your best bet is to Google the town and look for their official website. many will provide their ordinances there.
http://codes.sullivanpublications.com/codes-slp/
http://www.municode.com/library/ClientListing.aspx?stateID=25

every citizen should have the next two links if for no other reason than to stay informed of what legislation is being considered in our state.
http://house.mo.gov/
http://www.senate.mo.gov/

Missouri Highway Patrol
http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSHPWeb/Root/index.html

and a link to the ATF's website. every gun owner should spend a fair amount of time here educating themselves about Federal gun laws.
http://www.atf.gov/

National Institute of Justice for real crime stats.
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/welcome.html

a couple of site dealing with gun facts and myths. handy for those discussions with the anti's.

http://www.gunfacts.info/

i hope these links will get you started. enjoy!
