The news says he ran away from a roll over crash. It says nothing about an officer being shot.

The suspect must not know what "cutting wrists" actually means. He did a terrible job of it.

I know I heard something about an officer getting shot. Perhaps my ears heard something else?

I stepped away for a few hours, so I didn't get a chance to listen since 6:30.

The guy had open warrants, so he just took off on foot while leaving his wife and her children to fend for themselves after a deadly wreck on a busy freeway.
As much as I would like to comment on his actions, I will not.

Sounds like he may have been impaired, but thinking clearly. Can't really say I would blame him. Not saying I condone his actions. But they are understandable.

"[I]mpaired but thinking clearly" begs, modus ponens affirming the antecedents, the meaning of all of the words, impaired, clearly and thinking.

Not necessarily. I also have a scanner and many times one will hear the cop talk of what they think might be occurring, in the heat of the moment. Sure is fun to listen!

    In re recording conversations

And that invincibly concrete blockhead interstate scribbled on it and my Iggy_List worked just fine. All it takes is a little discipline.

The news reports I've seen said he broke into a house in Brookfield ([snark] now's when they need that massive armed response! [/snark]). I haven't sorted out yet whether or not the owners were home, though reports mentioned that they did have guns in the house ("a stash", as though it were illegal). Either the owners were home & ran, or came home to find their house circled by police & let the cops know there were guns in the house.

I think I know the reaction if he'd broken into most of our houses... It certainly wouldn't have been a 6-hour standoff! More like "GET ON THE FLOOR!", enforced by pointing a pistol at him, and once he was there get on the phone to police. They could even come in the same way he did, so no more house breakage (unlike what really happened). Or if someone else was home, too, they could open the door.
