Steel Plate Shoots around the Puget Sound area

For those that have never shot at steel plates....

Each venue offers a different twist to shooting plates. Check them out and see what works for you. Most will be competitive but it's a good eye opener for those that have not shot against someone else for time and accuracy.

does anyone know when they do these? i am a member at the NWSA in Oak Harbor and have never even heard of doing this there due to the fact that they dont have a backstop to avoid ricochets.

A few quick facts so you don't have to go looking through their sight to try and figure out if SSNW is what your looking for in this regard.

SSNW is a members only range, and their "steel reactive" target range is restricted to their $150 (a year) and above memberships. I understand from my conversations with their employees, you can pay an extra fee for using the reactive targets for one visit, if you have a membership plan that doesn't otherwise include that privilege. I believe I remember a figure of about $10 being quoted to me.

Range time is $10 - 15 per hour on top of the membership fee. (depending on the range time-card you buy)

Because the steel reactive lanes are small and indoors, you must use frangible ammunition, and their "official" policy seems to swing back and fourth between allowing you to bring your own, or forcing you to buy their in-house (and highly overpriced) ammo, depending on who you talk to, and when.

I used the reactive targets a few times back when I had a "premium membership" and remember the experience being somewhat lack luster. They only have 1 pattern-program (as of my spring 2010 visit) and you will quickly figure out the sequence, after which its like playing wack-a-mole when you know exactly when and where the mole is coming out next. Amusing at first, but no challenge beyond your own inability to hit a plate sized object from about 10-25 yards.

On the bright side, I WAS told by a few employees that if no-one else was using the reactive targets at the time I was in there, they would turn on 2 or 3 lanes all at once for no extra charge. You will still detect the sequence (as they are all running on the same program just at different intervals) but it doesn't get old as quick.

Aside from the rare occurrence of when the reactive target range is reserved for use by one company or agency, or another, there is almost never anyone using them.

O, and no "double-taps" are allowed on the reactive targets.

Here's some more shooting you can do in 1 against 1 shooting scenarios:
In Custer, at the Custer Sportsmen's club, there is Speed Steel on the 3rd Saturday of the month. It is a timed event, so you shoot against everyone else in your class, not just another shooter at a station across the bay. Fun event, and will tune your target aquisition and trigger skills. Classes are PCC (pistol caliber carbine) .22 pistol, CF pistol, revolver
Pin tops and Pin minor is shot Mano-A-Mano style, that is, the shooter at the other bay is shooting the same target array you are, and first shooter done wins the round. We shoot twice against every other shooter in the squad, then if 2 or more squads, a shoot-off for match winner is held.
Pin minor is using your defensive pistol. Pin tops is with a .22 pistol. If you don't happen to have the proper tool, often someone there will have a spare and loan you the needed equipment. Bring 150-200 rounds ammo.
Pin tops/Pin minor is 2nd Saturday of the month.
None of these are from holster, instead from low ready position. Those with a proper safety card have been known to be allowed to draw, but you won't be competitive. It'll just be practice for you.
Also, the range is cold as most ranges are, so you OCers will just have to cope with having your piece unloaded during your range time.

Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club ( http://www.sportsmans-club.org/ )offers steel plate shoots the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 6pm. It's a friendly group, on the smaller side lately, and shooting is 1 v 1 from low ready only.

To expand on the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club shoot, it is every Tuesday at 6pm. It is also a very friendly group, usually draws 30-40 entries each time, is 1 v 1, and you can enter the shoot-from-low-ready class, the draw class, or both. Better shooters often handicap themselves when going up against a new shooter, for example assigning themselves 6 plates (thus forcing a reload) before shooting the final popper, while the newer shooter does a 'standard' run of 4 plates plus the popper.
