ECU-SCCC--FINALLY found a faculty advisor...

OK, we've been trying to get a faculty member to sign our paperwork for 2 semesters, and we just are having no luck. The one faculty member who was pretty sypathetic is going to be out on medical leave all next semester, so he can't sign, and we've contacted 4 others, and nobody seems willing to sign on as our advisor...

So whats the secret? Are we doing something wrong, or is it just that the Faculty here at ECU are a bunch of spineless, anti-gun sheeple who are afraid to "rock the boat"?

How have other SCCC groups convinced faculty members to sign their paperwork? Any suggestions?

(like many universities, we have to have faculty advisors sign our paperwork to be officially recognized, in order to participate in events, set up tables, hand out literature, etc...)

This is the 3rd semester I've been involved in trying to get SCCC started here, and the third where we've come up short on the paperwork. We've got MORE than enough student members, but no faculty want's to sign on.

Is our only option going to be to "go rogue" and just run this group outside of official recognition, and fund everything we do (flyers, posters, etc) out of our own pockets?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

You're not in my region(I'm in the central region) but my advice to you is to literally talk to every faculty member the university has, in person. Splitting the work up to the members makes it easier, but my motto is "Trust, but verify." This means you'll have to make sure that people are actually doing the work you ask them to.

It took me about a month before I found a faculty member who was willing(actually more than happy) to sign on as my chapter's advisor. I only found him by asking other faculty members if they knew of anyone who was pro 2nd amendment.

Have you talked to your school's police department(assuming they have their own)?

Have you talked to anyone who is involved with Republicans and/or Libertarian related groups? They tend to know who is pro-2nd amendment.

Make sure you have all the other things you need done. Once they are done and ready to go and the only thing you need is to get a signature for an advisor, it will be much more satisfying to know that all you'll need to do is get the signature, submit the paperwork and hope you don't have to sue the school for something so silly.

I was afraid that was going to be my only option. I don't know if that can happen this late in the semester. This is finals week, and next semester, they only give you the first two weeks of the semester to register new clubs...

Oh, boy, was THAT a fiasco...

She actually treated me like the very suggestion that I might need to carry was a personal insult to her and the department. She asked me, "do you REALLY think this campus is that unsafe". And I answered, "did you really think that Virginia Tech was unsafe"... She just dismissively rolled her eyes at that one. I told her I live 18 miles off campus, and usually park several blocks off campus, and it wasn't ON campus I was worried about--it was that 3 or 4 block I walk to my car at midnight 3 nights a week I was worried about. I asked her if the department would be willing to provide me with an escort 3 nights a week to my car, and she said "we're not here to be personal bodyguards". To which I replied, "why would I need a bodyguard--is this area that unsafe? Gee, maybe I might need to defend myself then, huh?" She was not amused...

Yes, and I don't think their advisors would be on our side. This campus (and especially the campus police and Administration) seems to be 110% anti-gun, and 200% FOR fostering the "victim mentality"... It's sick, actually...

Make sure you have all the other things you need done.

I've already covered those bases. My paperwork is filled out, checked, double checked, and has been verified by the Student Activities Board--it's only missing a Faculty Advisor signature...

Maybe we can get something lined up in the next few weeks. I'll have to contact SCCC National, and see how they feel about us being an "unofficial, unsponsored" group for the Spring semester. We REALLY want to be part of the spring "empty holster protest" next year. We've got some VERY enthusiastic, well-educated members, and I think we could do some good work--it's just that the Administration is TOTALLY against the idea that students could possibly do anything proactive when it comes to personal safety, and the faculty seems so afraid of getting "blacklisted" that nobody is willing to step up to the plate for SCCC here.

I took this over from a female grad student two semesters ago, and she had been struggling for 2 semesters to get a faculty adviser, to no avail. Seh finally threw her hands up and walked away from it...

So it's been a year of asking around, and still no takers...

We may have to just be "freelancers"... ;)

Associate Professors

Are there any associate professors, aka new professors, that would be willing to sign on? Since the semester is pretty much over and the new semester is about a month away, you should check to see if you can get access to the newly hired faculty and get in contact with them. If they haven't been brainwashed by public schooling and the encouragement to remain a victim that comes with the college environment they may be of some help.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't at least one Republican/Libertarian group there who's adviser would be willing to just sign a piece of paper.
Does your university have a list of all the student organizations and their advisers? Have you gone through that list?
Another thing, about the people you've contacted already that turned down the option to be the advisor. You should keep a list of all of them and a reason as to why if they provided one. They may not want to be black listed by the faculty, but their names positions should definitely be known by your chapter's members.

Also, regarding the response you got from the university police/security, are they allowed to be armed? I know the police force here had to fight to be allowed to be armed a few years ago.

Have you contacted the eastern regional director for SCCC to see if he has any input on possible options?

You'll just have to go rogue. You can get all the things done (raising awareness) as an unofficial student organization. Granted, you'll have to raise extra funds by passing the hat but the alternative is to lose valuable time doing what your organization would otherwise do best . . 'educate'. You aren't getting any younger chasing faculty semester after semester. Don't play the school administration's game!

OC4Me, That is exactly our "backup plan" if we can't get "official"...

Well be hanging posters, handing out flyers, sponsoring Range Days, and forming a USPSA squad made up of students for local matches.

We've got a lot of stuff in the works. It's just frustrating that the administration is so brainwashed, and the administration has to fear for their job security if they support a group like SCCC...

Acacdemia shows it stripes....

I thought college educators were all about the open and free exchange of ideas? Like most liberal institutions they apparently mean thier ideas... Even if it's not allowed you have a powerful learning tool for the students. I'd think there would be at least one boat rocking legal professor that would take this on for that reason alone.

my kid loved ECU after the open house, that's a strike against in my book.

It's not so much the professors as it is the administration.

I know MANY pro-2A professors--one shoots USPSA, and I've been to the range with another on several occasions, and he has an AMAZING collection of long guns and handguns, and a CHP.

But apparently the administration here is so mind-numbingly ANTI-2A that any instructors fear for their job security if they speak up for 2A rights. And with the job market the way it is, replacement instructors are literally a dime a dozen these days...

Fascism rules from the top...

I have good news:

As of today, I found a faculty adviser for SCCC, ECU chapter.

Now, we just have to turn in the form, and we'll be officially recognized.

Thanks to "exilin77's" fast footwork, we now have a faculty advisor, and her signature has been obtained.

Our paperwork is complete, and I will submit it tomorrow (the FIRST day of classes!) to make SCCC-ECU an OFFICIAL campus organization.

This gives us some real advantages--we can put up display tables at "activity days", we can request reimbursement for printed material, promotional flyers, and even for activities related to our charter/constitution.

I will be contacting SCCC Regional and National this evening to let them know the paperwork is being submitted.

Now the FUN begins...

I am the Eastern Regional Director of SCCC, so I can speak with some authority on this matter :)

Official school recognition is NOT required to be an official chapter of SCCC. The Eastern region requires 5 named student members, and requires that the president be the person designated by the membership. That's it.

Many campuses require a greater number of members for official status (at my school, it was 12). But that's between you and the school.

as of today, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (ECU chapter) is now a recognized and official organization at East Carolina University. Thanks to everyone that offered help, guidance, and support in all areas.

Dreamer is President
I'm VP
mattwestm is a member of the organization as well

And hopefully more will join our cause and help support the right for students to protect themselves. The education process has begun, and we look forward to welcoming new members with open arms, to help them decode NC's horrible gun laws.

Thanks again, everyone that helped.

On February 14th I appeared as a "phone in guest" on a talk radio show here in NC, as an official rep for SCCC, regarding the topic of CC on college Campuses. I know this is a little off-topic, but I thought that some of y'all might be interested.

You can download the MP3 here:

http://viewpointsradio.blogspot.com/

You want the link dated February 14, 2011, entitled:
"Youthpoints: Valentine's Day, HB31 on Cell Phones, Movie Review: The Eagle, Concealed Carry on Campus"

This is a conservative talk station, and the panel for this show was comprised of students who were unanimously in favor of CC on campus. I think the appearance went well. I guess now I'm a "celebrity" somewhere other than just on ODCO...
