I may be going to IA from time to time. In the coming year, where is carrying legal and where it is not?

In Iowa, you need a permit to carry weapons, be they knives, firearms, tasers, you need a permit. A non resident of Iowa can have a permit issued by any state and Iowa will recognize is as of 1-1-11. You cannot carry: on school grounds, in/on the capitol complex, in casinos, in/on the fairgrounds(this is an administrative rule not law and if you have a permit will only result in trespassing). Permits are considered invalid if you become intoxicated (being under the influence of a controlled substance of having a BAC greater than .08) Do I even need to mention the federal laws? It's pretty simple here in Iowa.

Seems to be fairly similar to WI laws then. Can you carry in the wayside buildings?

I assume you mean the rest stops on the sides of the highways/interstates. As far as I understand it, carry is not prohibited at rest stops in Iowa.
