YOU can stop BATFE’s efforts to force licensed dealers to report sales of certain rifles (semi-automatic, 22cal or larger with detachable magazines) dead in its tracks but you must do it now.
BATFE has called for a limited comment period in violation of the standard 60 day rule. If you remember, that tactic was used against gun owners by the anti-gun Sen. Daniel Akaka and Rep. Raul Grijalva to extend the comment period on the National Park Service ban repeal (see: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25630796/ns/us_news-life/).
We can now have Senators Webb & Warner call for BATFE to either follow the rules and have the comment period set at the usual and normal 60 days or come before Congress for hearings. HOWEVER, it is imperative that you contact Webb & Warner NOW. Send them emails. Flood their offices with phone calls and tell them you want the comment period by BATFE extended on FR Doc. 2010–31755 (collection of data on multiple sales of rifles). Make sure you refer to the “FR Doc. number” in any phone call or correspondence.

Dear Senator:
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives is attempting to force licensed firearms dealers to report multiple sales of certain long guns (FR Doc. 2010-31755) without allowing the customary public comment period. This regulation was published in the December 17th Federal Register and comments close January 5th, 2011. That is less than 3 weeks over the holiday season and is a deliberate attempt by ATF to ram through a regulation they know will not survive a comment period and quite possibly is illegal.
In 2008, Congress intervened and re-opened the comment period for the Department of the Interior’s amended weapons regulation after the first comment period had closed for National Parks.
