A quick Google search brings up approximately 5.5 yards. If this is correct 40 rods is roughly 220 yards.

Aren't we talking about fishing rods?

There is a George Micheal joke there somewhere. Alas I am too mature to go there.

Ok, so Wiki shows a rod as

1 rod= 16+1⁄2 feet= 5+1⁄2 yards= 1⁄4 chain= 5.0292 metres

So 40 rods should be about 660 feet. Or 160 chains?
I got to say, I have never seen the use of rods... That law must be super old eh?

I paid attention in school...well...in math class, anyway.

A rod is 5.5 yards, 40 rods is a furlong (also 660 feet) which is an eighth of a mile.

660/5280 = .125 = 1/8

Rods work great if you're building an ark...
