Florida Chamber of Commerce alienates gun owners and endangers consumers.
In 2008 the Florida Chamber of Commerce fought the “guns in cars” bill in the legislature and then in the courts. The chamber failed to prohibit employees from having a viable means of self defense on their way to and from work. Had the Florida Chamber been successful in its attempts to stop and gut the law, there is little doubt that innocent lives would have been lost when Clay Duke opened fire on an otherwise defenseless school board.
Mike Jones, Chief of Security for Bay District Schools, used Florida’s “guns in cars” law to stop Duke from succeeding in killing all of the male members of the School Board. When Duke pulled his gun and sent the audience from the room, Jones went in to action. As a retired police officer and current Florida Concealed Firearms Licensee, he was able to run to his car to arm himself thanks to the 2008 law that allows employees with concealed firearms license to keep their gun locked in their car.
Today the Florida Chamber of Commerce’s Adam Babington is doubling down on his crusade to alienate up to 9 million Florida gun owners and render all Florida consumers defenseless. On December 17 he sent out a letter critical of Senate Bill 234 that makes claims that are pretty hard to swallow.
“Allowing holders of concealed weapons permits to openly carry their guns in public;”
TRUE - This should present no issue for the Chamber of Commerce. There are already hundreds of thousands of people carrying concealed and crime has gone down as a result. Open Carry has been proven to actively deter crime in the 43 states where it is lawful.
“Allowing holders of concealed weapons permits to openly carry their guns into private schools, even if the private school has a policy prohibiting firearms on its private property;”
FALSE – Any authorized employee can ask a licensed person to leave for carrying, or just about any other reason. Refusal to do so would be trespass.
“Allowing holders of concealed weapons permits to openly carry their guns into career centers, colleges, and universities, even if the center or school has a policy prohibiting firearms on its property;”

“Rewriting the “Guns at Work” bill from 2008 to allow anyone, not just employees, with a concealed weapons permit to bring their weapons onto the private property of another person or business, with or without that property owner’s consent."
DECEPTIVE– This only allows citizens who have been licensed, trained, fingerprinted, and investigated to store their lawfully owned gun in their car wherever they can legally park.
The Brady Campaign called for a boycott of Starbucks Coffee and its stores over their decision not to bar law abiding gun owners from their stores. Starbucks explained on March 3rd of this year “hat supporting local laws is the right way for us to ensure a safe environment for both partners and customers.”
It would appear that gun owners don’t just vote at the polls but also with their wallets. The gourmet coffee brand recently reported record 2nd, 3rd & 4th quarter and full year results despite a downturn in the economy that had Wall Street analyst predicting much shallower growth. It would seem that the buying power of the American gun owning public is a pretty strong force. I type this while enjoying a wonderful home brewed cup of Starbucks Caffè Verona.
In today’s challenging economic environment the Florida Chamber should be sticking to its charter of “fighting for jobs and defeating legislation threatening Florida's free enterprise system.” It would seem that the chamber has lost sight of individual civil rights, and the multi-billion dollar annual free enterprise in the firearms industry, and the economic impact of 60% of Florida households that own guns for self defense.
