Today’s Seattle Times on-line opinions include a piece by syndicated columnist David Brooks that should be required reading for every Jet City liberal as the aftershocks of Saturday’s attempted assassination of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continue to spread all the way to the Pacific Northwest, especially considering some of the legislation being proposed today that will reflexively get support from guys like Seattle-area Congressmen Jim McDermott.

To the post itself: This is a really sad state of things. It will come down to Us "Gun toting idiots versus them "Guns are bad" people. I have friends in Tucson and will be watching this very closely!

In the world of politics every politician is looking for an opportunity to get their face and name in the public spotlight. An event like this unfortunately brings them out in droves. We've seen this happen after every major "disaster" involving guns since the early 1930's. The NFA act had it's roots in the spectacular murders involving the famous Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. The assasination of the Kennedy brothers gave us the GCA of 1968 and the attempt on Regan gave us the "Brady Bill".

All of these pieces of legislation have a common thread. They were enacted before the Supreme Court ruled that the 2A is an individual right. This makes it a little harder for the politicians to ram through legislation that will stick just because some "whackadoodle" shoots up a shopping mall meeting.

The politicians will "gas on and on" with whatever message they think will get them the most votes next election. Perhaps a few letters from voters that don't want their rights infringed upon (further) will send the message that "they" are a factor to be reckoned with. Silence at this point will merely give more strength to the anti-gun crowd.

Write, phone, e-mail, your Representatives. Anything but remain silent.

Unforunately, as a community, we tend to get relaxed just because things overall have gone our way recently in the courts (as a whole). NOW is the time to be even more vigilant with our rights.
