    Guns are a health hazard

A LETTER FROM THE LWVIA PRESIDENT

    Guns are a health hazard

The persons who were killed and wounded in the Arizona shooting are less healthy than they were before the shooting. Even the persons who escaped direct physical injury, but experienced the trauma of the event have less vigorous health than they had before.

This is not a difficult concept. Shooting is a hazard to health. We regulate other threats to public health but allow the threat from gunshot trauma to remain in our community. In Iowa, we have actually reduced the protection citizen health has enjoyed from possible gunshot trauma. We regulate water quality, we require childhood immunizations, we concern ourselves with food safety, and more. All of these actions are important safeguards to our health as a community.

But we do little to protect Iowa citizens from gunshot trauma, even when gunshot health risks are 100% preventable. In fact, recent Iowa legislation required county sheriffs, in the vast majority of cases, to issue gun permits regardless of the sheriff’s reservations about the applicant’s qualifications. Current conversation in Des Moines suggests that gun restrictions in Iowa will be further reduced.

There is nothing in the Second Amendment to our US Constitution that requires each of us to be exposed to a known, preventable, serious health risk. Being shot by a gun is clearly detrimental to your health.

This is not a difficult concept. Guns are dangerous. Guns bring a threat to community health. Members of our community deserve to have their health safeguarded. The League of Women Voters of Iowa supports the right of citizens to live in an environment in which known health hazards are recognized and eliminated or, at least, minimized. We look to our legislators to do all they can to eliminate the known, preventable, serious health risks that guns bring to our community. The League urges all citizens to remind their government representatives that each citizen has a right to live in the healthiest reasonable community environment. Guns are a health hazard that can be eliminated. It is time to take action.

    My Response

Slightly modified - wonder if Ms Loehrlein will get the point?

    Cars are a health hazard

This is not a difficult concept. Driving is a hazard to health. We regulate other threats to public health but allow the threat from vehicular trauma to remain in our community.

There is nothing in the US Constitution that requires each of us to be exposed to a known, preventable, serious health risk. Being injured by a car is clearly detrimental to your health.

I did not address one of her statements: "even when gunshot health risks are 100% preventable."

100% preventable?? Not even in England or Australia where violent crime has skyrocketed after banning guns, which BTW would seem obvious is her ultimate goal.

I'm going to write and ask her: "If guns are so detrimental to people's health, why do we allow police officers to carry the things?"

Mad cow disease is controlled by the wholesale eradication of entire herds - doesn't do much for the healthy critters though when only a few created the problem. Root out the problem steers or burn the whole herd. We have that choice, she would take it away from us.

The criminal element engages in high risk practices and is thereby exposed to certain "health risks" - logical no? Should we be punished for their contamination by disallowing the appropriate antibodies to the disease? A little bit of prevention via controlled exposure goes a long way.

The League of Women Voters of Iowa, as are MANY other Anti-Gun Organizations, are in a Serious Predicament in that 'They' Realize that Their Agenda is Failing.

Therefore, 'They' are trying to Redesign Their Arguments as a 'Back-Door' Scheme for Gun Control.

Clearly, though, Iowans' WILL NOT Accept this Philosphical Rhetoric, as The Numbers of Persons who sought out for Lawful Licensure under Iowas' New Shall Issue Permiting Scheme Speak for Themselves.

Oh I know. Like the Brady Campaign this "league" is pursuing a failed philosophy.

    Water is a health hazard

The persons who were killed and wounded in the devastation of floods after hurricane Katrina are less healthy than they were before. Even the persons who escaped direct physical injury, but experienced the trauma of the event have less vigorous health than they had before. Not to mention all the kids who drown in swimming pools or die of water intoxication!

This is not a difficult concept. Drinking water is a hazard to health. We regulate other threats to public health but allow the threat from water-borne trauma to remain in our community. In Iowa, we have actually reduced the protection citizen health has enjoyed from possible water-borne trauma. We regulate shooting ranges, we require childhood immunizations, we concern ourselves with food safety, and more. All of these actions are important safeguards to our health as a community.

But we do little to protect Iowa citizens from water-borne trauma, even when water health risks are 100% preventable. In fact, Iowa laws allow homeowners to build swimming pools and buy bottled water, in the vast majority of cases, regardless of the sheriff’s reservations about the applicant’s qualifications. Current conversation in Des Moines suggests that water restrictions in Iowa will be further reduced.

Don't forget sources of heat, electricity, prescription drugs, doctors, household chemicals, choking hazards and tearing off the tags from sleeping mattresses.
