    OC to Sturgis via Motorcycle

    Hello South Dakota,

I am planning on my first trip to Sturgis for the little motorcycle gathering there this year. Any experience with OC via motorcycle on this? I do have a permit to conceal issued by my state of residence so I won't have any issues on that count--- I think.
I did a quick review on the maps link on this forum and looked at the handguns.us site for the concealed carry stuff. Just looking for those with personal experience with this event and those also with OC experience in South Dakota.

    Thanks all.

23-7-7.3. Reciprocity with other states--Conditions. The attorney general shall compare South Dakota permit issuance statutes with the permit issuance statutes in states with which reciprocity is sought or requested in order to determine whether the laws of the other state meet or exceed the requirements of this chapter for the issuance of a permit. The secretary of state may enter into reciprocity agreements with other states after the attorney general has notified the secretary of state that the other states' laws meet or exceed the provisions of this chapter.

23-7-7.4. Nonresident permit to carry concealed pistol--Validity in South Dakota--Application. Any valid permit to carry a concealed pistol, issued to a nonresident of South Dakota, is valid in South Dakota according to the terms of its issuance in the state of its issue, but only to the extent that the terms of issuance comply with any appropriate South Dakota statute or promulgated rule. However, if the holder of such a nonresident permit to carry a concealed pistol becomes, at any time, a legal resident of South Dakota, the provisions of this section no longer apply.

32-20-6.6. Carrying firearm on motorcycle or off-road vehicle--Exception for holder of concealed pistol permit or disabled hunter permit--Enforcement--Violation as misdemeanor. No person, other than a law enforcement officer or conservation officer, or any person on the person's own land or land leased by the person, may operate or ride on any motorcycle or off-road vehicle with any firearm in the person's possession unless the firearm is completely unloaded and within a carrying case which encloses the entire firearm. However, this section does not apply to any person who is carrying a pistol and possesses a permit to carry a concealed pistol issued pursuant to chapter 23-7. This section does not apply to any person who holds a permit issued pursuant to 41-8-37 while engaged in hunting from an off-road vehicle in accordance with the provisions of the permit. This section shall be enforced by all law enforcement officers including conservation officers. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Soo yes is the answer. I have made sure VIA South Dakota Highway patrol and Sheriff deptartment (clay county). I do have the firearm hand book given to the highway patrol because I am in the military with him. I read it over because I too plan to go to Sturgis and OC while on a motorcycle.

Last year was the 1st time I carried to the rally outta the 6 yrs I have been going to. I cant really say I OC since I had a vest on most of the time. Mornings I wore a sweatshirt so it was still covered. Coming home it was so dam hot I didnt need it on my hip. Lower portion of the gun stuck out and was never given a second glance in Winner SD.
I never did carry in Sturgis. Mostly cause I was always sh!t faced when I went or left there! I have never felt 'unsafe' around other bikers. Plus I only go to 2 different bars there and know most of the staff. It was always in the saddle bag tho. Really didn't want the police hassle. They are bad enough without highlighting myself.

Just a tip, stay off I-90 and stick to the south route. So much better. You will have a good time and will be back.

I'm heading there this year as well.

I OC'd in and around the area during the '09 event and didn't meet with any issues.

I was amazed at the abundance of drunk fools riding bikes out there.

I sure would like to obtain a copy of the firearm handbook you speak of. Would like to carry the very same handbook that they carry. I live in the Black Hills but travel a great deal and do so armed. I actually live in Custer County.

FOIA would work. But like I said it was given to me because he had an extra one. I believe it was a 2007 version that i have. If they have updated it iwould not have it . It was the South Dakota Highway Patrol Guide to Firearms law handbook i do not have right by me this second but i can surely send it your way when i do

It all depends on whether or not my riding partner did "his job" and got us set up at a private house again. They said they could fit us in for three days this year but I haven't heard back yet for sure.

Otherwise it's a camping site out northwest of the interstate this year.

Either that or just "day trip" it in from Gillette every day as we do have a good friend out there who can accomodate all of us with no problems.
