I read an article that went along with this photo, which was all about regular citizens taking up "arms," such as golf clubs and pipes, to defend their homes and businesses, but the writer (a biased anti-gunner?) only made a brief mention of a few citizens being armed with shotguns. Dispite the picture, the writer refused to acknowledge that handguns were being used for self-defence, while he made several references to gangs being armed with both knives and guns.

In many countries that ban (i.e. Russia) or severely restrict (i.e. Germany, France) ownership of handguns, "gas" guns that shoot pepper spray or CS are commonly available that look like real models of firearms, as well as blank guns and imitation guns. I've always thought the "gas gun" concept was retarded, myself, but in countries where you can't own or carry a real firearm it makes some people feel "armed." It's impossible to tell from the photo if the gun is real or not.

On the other hand, although I don't have any detailed knowledge of gun laws in the Mid-East I do know that guns (plus swords and knives) are a big part of traditional Arab culture and you aren't a "real man" if you don't own a weapon. So I would be surprised if there weren't some form of legal gun ownership in Egypt, even under Hosni Mubarak.
