Hi I am new here and this is my first post... My wife and I are going to move to Reno from the Sacramento area in about six months... I no nothing about the gun laws in Reno excepted that there more liberal then California... I have some what of a compulsive obsess disorder when it comes to firearms... I have about 35 firearms right now and my questions are!
#1 Will I have to register them all when I move there?
#2 Can you open carry anywhere? Even in a casino?
#3 Is it easy to get a Concealed weapon permit?
#4 How far from town will I half to drive before I can go plinking?
#5 Are there any laws that I should be aware? That are not obvious?
Any info here would be greatly appreciated .... Thanks in advance... Noel

In Reno, there is no firearm registration required by law.

In Reno, OC is where not denied, and you can carry in a useful fashion. i.e., with the round where it is useable.

Casinos are privately owned, and thus are a business like any other wrt carry.

#1 Nope

#2 Legally yes, some casinos will ask you to leave.

#3 The process is aproximately: Take an 8 hour class, submit the application, get fingerprinted, pass their background check, wait up to 120 days. It'll probably cost you about $200.

#4 I forget the exact Washoe County Code, but to be legal you must be IIRC like 3000 feet away from the nearest structure or maybe a little farther than that, and there are congested zones. I don't remember the code off of memory, so check the code first. The drive is probably 10-20 miles from the center of Reno but I don't know all the spots. Where I shoot usually is about 20 miles away from the center of Reno, but I don't live anywhere near the center of Reno so for me it is a very brief drive.

#5 Most of the carry laws are summarized in the pamphlet you can download from the thread on this link.
http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?45415-Nevada-(Open)-Carry-Pamphlet
Always check the laws yourself too. It is not legal advice.

Hi Noel!

My wife and I moved to Reno from Elk Grove back in October and so far I'm loving it.

Since your questions have been answered by others already I'd like to add this link:

http://www.washoesheriff.com/firearms-discharge.html

The Live Map gives you a map (road, terrain, or photo) with an overlay of where you can and can't shoot. The Reno/Sparks area isn't as big as the Sacramento region and shooting areas aren't that far out of town.

Thank a bunch guys!

Wow Thanks a lot guys... Great info and tools... I have been looking forward to this for a very long time... I wasn't sure my wife would ever jump on the wagon here with the grandkids being over here... I live in Reno for about a year and half back in 1979 and love it... I moved back here for a job; but my wife and I are in out 60's now and I would like to settle in over there before I get to old to move again...
What do you guys think about the cost of live there verse here?... I know there is no state taxes but everything else seems pretty close, Rent, food, gas, etc.

Here's what I have noticed so far:

Rent varies depending on where you want to live (obviously). I didn't really notice a big cost difference in rent overall. Home prices have fallen dramatically and IMO it'll be less expensive to buy than rent. You can get a decent home for $150K - $200K in nice neighborhoods in Reno/Sparks. If you don't mind driving 15 to 20 minutes north towards the Reno/Stead area I've seen 3br/2bth homes for $100K.

The sales tax is 7.725%, gasoline is less expensive than Sacramento by 10-20 cents/gallon, and there is no state income tax. The price of food, clothing, etc... is the same.

Utilities: Charter prices are the same as Comcast. AT&T is ... AT&T. NV Energy provides natural gas and electricity service. IMO they're less expensive than PG&E but more expensive than SMUD for electricity (I don't think Rocklin was on the SMUD grid though).

Car insurance is cheaper as well.

The cost of firearms and ammo is the same at most retail stores although you have a much better selection of firearms here in NV for obvious reasons. Sometimes Wild Sports there on Greenback actually has better prices... go figure.

Although you don't NEED one, it's nice to have 4WD or AWD. It does snow here and it'd be nice and convenient for the drives back to the Sacramento region if you still have kids there and want to visit.

Thanks for the info... But I thought Nevada didn't have sale tax's? ...Right now my wife and I are living in what is so called a luxury apartment... I had a failed back operation about 5 years ago so a house is out of the question for me... A nice two bedroom apartment will work just fine... Right now all I have to do is pick up the phone and they take care of everything; Even air filters and the light bulbs... I lost my house because of my back, but you know this luxury apartment living definitely has its good side to it... Hey thanks again for all you help... Noel

you're not supposed to put gun on craigslist but people do, also backpages.com have guns for sale, the newspaper classified have guns as well as nevada shooters.net but most of those are Vegas. I think open carry has for sale too but its been so long since I had money to buy.
Oh btw, welcome and a lot of folks go shooting at Derby Dam its exit 36 or something like that.

Come up and spend a week here.

Then compare that to Rocklin, and she will wonder why you didn't move here years ago.
Actually we have been planning on it... I have gone through about a hundred apartment complexes online and there is Probably 14 We want to come over and see...We will in all probability get a room at Circus Circus or the Peppermill for a couple of nights and check it out....

Gee, Noel...hard to say. Some areas of Sun Valley aren't good but you can tell by the shacky, rundown trailers and junk cars in the yard. The best thing to do is figure out what you are looking for....condo/townhome? singlefamily? Singlefamily with acreage? In a subdivision? Or not in a subdivision? And where will you and the missus be working?
Reno is a big area and you have to decide how much and how far you want to commute.

I will say that one area to stay away from would be around downtown from about Moana to Wells (south to north) and from Kietzke to S. Virginia (going east to west).
