This is an eye opener:

Quote:

"Some in Congress want all guns registered. But there’s something that they aren’t telling you: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Haynes v. U.S. (1968) that convicted felons have a Constitutional right to not register a gun, because to register a gun would be self-incrimination. Only people that aren’t criminals can be punished
for not registering.

& if answers to 4 myths are not enough, try 9:

http://www.grnc.org/images/nine_myths_of_gun_control.pdf

Quote:

"Far from being pillars of society, it has been noted that more than two-thirds of gun homicide "victims" are drug traffickers or their customers."

I am a little concerned about the age of some of the facts in the NC link. I see 1980, 1994, etc. Is there simply no newer studies/statistics available on these same studies, or are they just reporting old stuff?

I'd like to see sources for the second link, Myth #9.

Quite a revelation if true.

Souces: (If anyone has more up to date info, post it)

http://www.ncpa.org/pdfs/st176.pdf [See Myth 3]

http://actionamerica.org/guns/guns1.shtml [See "Armed Citizens Make Fewer Mistakes Than Police"]

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/jan/14/few-back-tougher-gun-laws/ [Posting by "Hawkin," January 14]

And source is.... a liberal magazine quoting a study

Quote (partial quote of Hawkin post) :

"Quote: Newsweek
Gun-control advocates look at guns only as a means to harm others even though they are more often used to prevent injury. According to a 1995 study entitled “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun” by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, published by the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology at Northwestern University School of Law, law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year.

That means that firearms are used 60 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to shoot with criminal intent. Of these defensive shootings, more than 200,000 are by women defending themselves against sexual abuse. About half a million times a year, a citizen carrying a gun away from home uses it in self-defense. Again, according to Kleck amd Gertz, “Citizens shoot and kill more criminals than police do every year [2,819 times versus 303].” Moreover, as George Will pointed out in an article entitled “Are We a Nation of Cowards?” in the November 15, 1993, issue of Newsweek, while police have an error rate of 11 percent when it comes to the accidental shooting of innocent civilians, the armed citizens’ error rate is only 2 percent, making them five times safer than police.

Sowell, who is African-American, correctly points out that gun-control laws don’t control guns, “They disarm potential victims. Why do you think they disarmed slaves? Because if slaves had been armed, that would have been the end of slavery."

The Will Newsweek column is here: (some good stuff in it)

http://www.newsweek.com/1993/11/14/are-we-a-nation-of-cowards.html

The source is identified in the column as:

"A nationwide study by Don Kates, the constitutional lawyer and criminologist, found that only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The 'error rate' for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high."

Surprised that nobody mention the greatest resource for debunking "gun myths."

Free e-book source material.
