An interesting quote, from an editorialist, Joseph Whilden, in the Charleston Gazette- 1820's, at a time when Political-correctness was beginning to rear it's head, and the topic of duels was in debate..

"While we may deplore it's effects, it must be confessed that in many instances, the anticipation of a duel preserves those courtesies of life which otherwise would be frequently violated"....
