Around 7:45 last night my family and I went to the YMCA in York County and I was Virginia tuckin my P11.
We stood in line at the check in desk for a few minutes, waiting to scan our membership cards. Then we went to the Family locker room as we have been doing since 2008,during which I have never had a problem or question about my weapon, ever.
While in the locker room, getting our swimming attire on, a young man named Josh comes into the locker room and asked me if I had a pistol with me, I answered yes. He then informed me of the YMCA policy of not allowing ANY type of weapons or anything that could be potentially used as a weapon into the facility; and asked me to put my gun in my vehicle. I informed him that I was about to lock it up in a locker with a high security, cut resistant lock, and that I have been carrying in there for years with no problems.
Being the smart a$$ that I am sometimes, I asked him about ball point pens, penciles and padlocks, since either of those are POTENTIALLY weapons, he said he needed to talk to his supervisor. A few minutes later he came back with another employee, and stated that his supervisor needed to speak with me up front.
So I went up front and spoke with Allison, a not all together unattractive woman, that asked me to speak with her in her office. I complied and followed her into her office. She proceeded to tell me that the YMCA has always had a policy against any type of potential weapon being carried into their facility. I told her that I had been carrying in there for a few years now, and had spent time chatting with several other supervisors and employees while open carrying, and had never been advised of this policy, or even had my weapon brought up in conversation.
Allison then proceeded to tell me that nobody must had ever seen it, although in warmer months I carry in my hip holster, which is far more noticable than my IWB holster. I asked her if the YMCA would take responsibility for me and my family's safety while we walked through the more isolated and darker parts of their parking lot, she said "No".
She then said that they are only concered about the members and that by banning weapons they were helping to stop people from getting hurt, if a "person off the street came into the facility to harm others". I then asked her how disarming the members would protect them from a violent criminal coming into the facility looking to harm their members. She said "I'm not going to argue with you about this", to which I replied "I'm not arguing, simply asking a valid question".
But she was not to be reasoned with and still requested that I removed my gun from their facilty. So I left her office, went to the pool area and retrieved my family and went back to the locker room for changing our clothes, again. As we left the building my wife stopped at the front desk to cancel our membership, and I continued to our vehicle to strap in the kids.
Apparently while I was waiting for my wife in our van, a York County deputy showed up in the building, because a call had come in, that a man with a gun was refusing to leave the facility. The deputy approached my wife and "hung" around her until she was done with her paperwork and then proceeded to escort her out the door. He told her about the call dispatch had gotten. My wife told the deputy what really happened, and he seemed to instantly relax a little, according to her. Where we were parked I did not have a good visual of her coming out, and I totally missed the deputy. She did tell me that he did not put his hands on her or anything, and was very polite, once she told him how it all really went down, even going as far as complaing about the YMCA and other local businesses with this stupid policy.
Then we came home. But I am curious. If Allison had in fact lied about my actions, did she infact lie to LE, and committ a crime?
