GRNC Alert 3-18-11:
CCW in Parks & Restaurants Vote Needs a Push

Act now to push NC House passage of HB 111: "Concealed Handgun Permit Valid in Parks & Restaurants." This bill has been delayed by concerns of a few in the Republican caucus but could be voted on as early as Wednesday. The Republicans list below need to hear from you, not only to lead them to support the bill, but to remove the ‘poison pill’ Ross amendment under which restaurant servers could ask anyone served alcohol whether they are carrying firearms.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

CALL & E-MAIL each of the legislators below, especially if you live in the district, using the tailored messages below. To find your district, go to: http://www.grnc.org/contact_reps.htm

CALL YOUR OWN NC HOUSE REP: Do so even if you know he supports the bill, telling him to support removing the weakening Ross amendment and to oppose any other weakening amendments proposed for the bill. Again, find out who represents you in the NC House by going to: http://www.grnc.org/contact_reps.htm

USE AUTOMATED E-MAIL FOR SWING VOTERS: If you have not already used GRNC’s automated e-mailer to contact swing voters in the House, go to: http://grnc.org/alerts/email3_13_11.htm#Please

DELIVER THESE MESSAGES

Below are tailored messages and contact information for three members of the Republican caucus who have expressed reservations about the bill.

MAJORITY LEADER PAUL STAM (again)
NC House 37, R-Wake
919-733-2962, Paul.Stam@ncleg.net

That’s right, word has it that Republican HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER PAUL STAM is once again acting as an obstacle to passing pro-gun legislation. Let him know in no uncertain terms that you didn’t elect Republicans to undermine your rights, and that you will remember his consistent opposition to Second Amendment interests. We have not included a sample letter because we want him to hear directly from voters.

CALL STAM BETWEEN 10:00 AND 12:OO ON MONDAY, March 21 at 919-733-2962. If you miss that time block, call him whenever you can. While you’re at it, e-mail him at: Paul.Stam@ncleg.net

REP. DAVID GUICE (pronounced "Gice")
NC House 113, R-Henderson, Polk, Transylvania
919-715-4466, David.Guice@ncleg.net

Sample message:

Dear Representative Guice:

Your concerns about misbehavior by concealed handgun permit-holders at kids’ sporting events held within public parks are misplaced. For sixteen years, permit-holders have proven themselves sane, sober and law-abiding; according to the State Bureau of Investigation, of 336,743 concealed handgun permits approved, only 1,007 (0.29% or less than 1/3 of a single percent) have been revoked -- most for reasons unrelated to firearms. Gun-related crimes by permit-holders are all but unheard of.

Meanwhile, crime in ostensibly "gun free" zones such as municipal and state parks has skyrocketed, with rape, murder and assault becoming routine. I strongly urge you to enable lawful North Carolinians to protect their families in restaurants and parks by supporting HB 111 in its strongest possible form. I will be monitoring your actions via Grass Roots North Carolina legislative alerts.

Respectfully,

---------------------------------

Rep. Jamie Boles
NC House 52, R-Moore

Is this really a CCW or CHP in Parks & Restaurants? Nit picky, I know, but let's avoid the confusion for the new folks coming into OCDO.

I get what you're saying but I think you may be thinking about it incorrectly. The goal is to make carrying of a concealed weapon/handgun(ccw) by concealed handgun permit(CHP) holders legal in parks & restaurants. To say "concealed handgun permit in parks & restaurants" doesn't make much sense; I can take my permit anywhere, just not the gun. On the other hand, "concealed carry of a weapon in parks & restaurants" makes sense and is what we're all hoping/working for.

Nit picky, yes, but only because you were ;)

If we're getting nit picky, it actually legalizes ALL forms of carry in restaurants, for CHP holders.

guys i know this is the site for open carry but it is important for this bill to get passed. it will break down one or two of the stupid barriers that we have to deal with. even if it is a concealed carry bill it might help bring us a little closer to being able to carry any way we want to.
senojkj. i liked the letter explaining that people have been carrying for 16 years and bad things haven't happened. if you don't mind i would like to use that in a letter to the editor in our local paper
