CARSON CITY -- A bill that would lift restrictions that prevent concealed weapons permit holders from carrying guns on Nevada's college campuses was approved Friday by a legislative committee.

The Senate Government Affairs Committee voted 4-1 in favor of Senate Bill 231, which would strike from state law a provision that requires people with a weapons permit to first get permission from a college or university president before taking their gun on Nevada System of Higher Education property.

Good news, now the real challenge begins.

The Senate Government Affairs Committee voted four to one to "Amend, and do pass" SB 231. The ammendments discussed are;

Amendments: The following two conceptual amendments have been offered for discussion purposes, which offer some flexibility to NSHE to address the issue of concealed weapons at certain events and in dormitories:

1. Prohibit a permittee from carrying a concealed weapon while attending any event held at a sporting venue with a seating a capacity of 1,000 or more that is located on the property of the NSHE. Require the Board of Regents to establish policies and procedures regarding how to implement this restriction in relation to parking and tailgating for any such event that occurs on the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Any such policy may not prohibit a permittee who is on the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education for reasons other than attending the event at a sporting venue from carrying a concealed weapon.
(presented for discussion purposes by Chairman Lee)

2. Require the Board of Regents to prescribe rules concerning the storage of firearms in dormitories or residence halls located on the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Such rules may not prohibit concealed firearms in dormitories or residence halls.
