If the federal government shuts down, what will happen to NICS checks that the FBI conducts?

Here is a real question: What part of BATFE is essential? (Please don't use personalnsults or the thread will be locked)

I'd be willing to bet we won't be seeing any 5320.1/4's processed during a shutdown. They generally take 4-6 weeks anyway, so it'd likely just be a short delay...

"What part of BATFE is essential?"

NONE is essential. and in fact it should not exist.

There's nothing that the BATFE does which couldn't either be dispensed with or performed more efficiently and with more professional integrity by blind, brain damaged rodeo clowns.

Lol...

I've met a few rodeo clowns. They definitely have more professional integrity, and are genuinely concerned with the health and well-being of the rider they protect.

Sadly, BATF doesn't appear to share their concern when it comes to law-abiding citizens.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was originally just the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It was part of the Treasury Department until it was absorbed by Homeland Security in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks.

The purpose of the organization was ostensibly to enforce collection of the taxes on alcohol, tobacco and firearms. They still go on raids on moonshine and cigarette smuggling operations, although what these have to do with Homeland Security I'm not real clear on. Maybe Al-Qaeda is financing its ops with 'shine these days??

They really ought to be concentrating on hillbillies cooking up joy-juice in the peckerwoods and stop vaunting themselves as the first line of defense against (fill in the blank), becaause they're not.

ATF has been juggled back and forth between Treasury and Justice since it's founding. It's now part of Justice, not DHS.

They need to start processing Form 4's and Form 1's a lot faster, perhaps increase the number of examiners from 13 to 200 or 500. Other than that they can close the rest of the bureau down entirely.

There's a program to restore the RTKBA to fully-reformed felons and misdemeanor domestic dispute convicts. But these get told with a smirk that although this Constitution-fulfilling program exists, the money to fund it does not. The program is administered thru BATFE.

The BATFE is non-essential as the Gubment already has an FBI to enforce the same laws the ATF does. It has another agency set aside for federal fugitives, as well. Creating the ATF is just as stupid as creating a US Murder Investigation Service or a US Shoplifting Agency.

It's another way for the Feds to fund themselves with more useless people and junk.
