Is Dearborn breaking Michigan's preemption law?

Hello!

I walked up to the records bureau counter inside the Dearborn police station today. This area is open to the public in that it's connected to the main lobby. On the counter there is a sign that says something along the lines of ''Please do not DISPLAY,LOAD,HANDLE weapons at counter''

Is this not a blatant violation of Michigan's preemption law? If so , how can we get it removed?

I don't have the sign in front of me, but if it is the way you say it is , then i would say they want you to keep your firearm in your holster case etc... aka keep your hands off your weapon !!
perfectly normal request

I agree.

If the sign says exactly what you say, I'd interpret that to say "Keep your weapon holstered."

Or, in the eyes of the police, 'you don't touch yours, they don't touch theirs.'

Thanks for the input guys,

I haven't tried to open carry there to see if their definition of 'display' means unholstered weapon. The sign is probably as I written above.

On a different note, glad to join this forum - the open carry movement is rapidly growing.

This is how I read it too.

If you open carry there and something bad develops from this, let us know and MOC will take steps to correct it.

The sign probably dates back to when we had to take handguns to the police station for "safety inspection." I'm sure they had a few issues with the way people handled the firearms when they brought them in.

You should see the sign outside of the Battle Creek City offices building. It says something like "anybody carrying a firearm, or suspected of carrying a firearm, may be required to have a police escort while in the building."

Wow! Never knew Battle Creek PD had so little to do with their time other than to follow people around who are 'suspected' of OBEYING THE LAW? Silly is as silly does I guess. Carry on :)

I agree with the above comments that that as a demand, this makes sense. But even still, the word "please", in my opinion implies a request that they know they may or may not be able to enforce. This is unlike the OCSD which has that straight forward and pesky no guns sign which I love OCing past.

A "magical sign" does not stop firearm carry?

Imagine that!

Well I ran down to Dearborn PD today , met an older LEO at the desk . I asked him how they feel about open carry , he said its your right to carry openly on your hip you just draw some attention to yourself. He said they haven't had too many incidents with open carriers, mentioned the one at fairlane lol...gun point. I don't recall which one of you it was

Forgot to ask about that sign though but in context of everything, Dearborn PD is probably on the softer side of things when it comes to dealing with OCers.
