As an Illinois resident I understand the fight that you are going through right now. I hope that you will redouble your efforts to defeat AB144. Good luck and God speed. Carry on!

AB 144, if passed, would cause law abiding citizens to become criminals by virtue of simply exercising their rights to enjoy lawful target shooting upon public lands, i.e., lands owned by BLM.

Based on the definitions of this proposed bill (Ref section 26388) it would include those people simply removing there lawfully transported and unloaded handgun from its locked container, once on public lands and carrying said unloaded weapon from their vehicle to a firing line.

"AB 144 section 26388 makes it a crime to Openly Carry an Unloaded Handgun on Public Lands unless the person carrying that handgun is listed as the registered owner of said handgun with the Department of Justice pursuant to Section 11106"

As you may know, handgun registration has only been required since 1991 and is only required on the sale/transfer of handguns sold within California. Nothing in the law compelled owners of legally acquired handguns prior to this date (law) to register said handguns. However, if this bill passes, it will require all citizens of the State of California to either register said handguns, if unloaded open carried on public lands or risk arrest.

So lets see what happens after this bill passes and some over zealous park ranger decides they need to run your handguns serial number to verify your the registered owner.

FROM THE EXAMINER ARTICLE: "The current reality is that violent criminals are attacking and killing our police officers with a growing and brazen impunity."

I did a little research and apparently while they may be more brazen, the numbers have not increased.
I limited my review to the United States during my lifetime, 1960 - 2010 (2011 is not over yet so data is not complete, 31 to date)

The number of Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty by gunfire in the 60s was similar to what it is in the 2000s. It rose sharply in the 70s and has been declining pretty steadily through the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.

Here's a graph of the data you listed:

Anyone have data on estimated number of US LEOs per year?

You want some very meaningful figures, then make a comparison between the population size of the demographic area and the number of officers killed.

I think I can safely predict a sharply declining line.

Thanks to better training, better medical techniques and the increased use of Bullet resistant body-wear.
