Take her to the range, and carry around the house. A little exposure therapy will go a long way. Who knows, she may be carrying with you soon.

I will have to take her to the range, for sure. I'm also going to take my 13 year old son and teach him gun safety and how to shoot.

I thought about wearing the gun around the house, but decided against it. The night I wore my gun out to the store, when we got home my wife actually started to cry. She was afraid of me carrying the gun. I told her that I loved her more than the gun, and if she wanted I would take it to a gun store and sell it the following day. After some reflection, she told me not to sell it. She told me not to wear it outside the house, and just keep it in the house for self-defense. That she told me not to sell it was a promising sign. I don't want to push it farther by carrying on my person around the house. I plan to ease her into it gently, one step at a time. From what she said, I think she is open to going to the range with me.

We have had some group meet ups in the past where a group of us would have lunch, or walk down the strip or the Fremont Experience. If she is willing to come with you to the next one and see how for the most part no one cares we are carrying and how comfortable we are open carrying it might help her. Has she read some of the posting on every day carrying? Sounds like you are going about it the best way you can. As they say baby steps and if Mama is not happy, no one is happy.

Has she ever been in a gun range? If not and decides to try it I suggest some heads up information for her. I have seen first timers mostly females at indoor ranges go in without any knowledge of what to expect and when the first shot goes off the loudness and sound shock scared them so bad, they turned to their better half with a fast walk toward the door saying I am out of here! Just my opinion outdoor ranges are better for the first timer.

Had it happen to me as I was shooting in the desert with 22 rifles my sons girlfriend I think 17 years old back then was with us having no problem with the 22s. She was by my truck not too far behind us and I decided to shoot my 44mag pistol. One shot without warning her and the tears started I felt like crap, she and my son were pissed and the end of that shooting trip.

A pistol in the house for self-defense is fine... IF you're IN the house when you need it. If you're carjacked in NLV, or accosted in a parking lot downtown, that gun at home isn't much of a deterrent to - or help getting out of - the dangerous situation. You have a 13 year old son, so I'm assuming that your marriage is about that long (plus or minus) too. Curiosity forces me to ask... is this your first pistol during your marriage, or just your first public carry, or both? Depending on the answer, your wife may be more concerned about the OCaspect, than the gun itself. The solution there may be a NV CCW. If it is a fear of the gun (or also a fear of the gun) your trip to the range with her is an excellent plan.

My personal experience indoctrinating females into the safe and proper use of a handgun, has been that 90% of them are natural shots with a handgun. On target from the get-go! And the other 10% are fast learners, but both scenarios require that you don't start them out trying to shoot a .50cal Desert Eagle. Her first experience cannot be physically unpleasant, or it will reinforce any negative assumptions she may have about guns in general. Make that first trip fun and exciting for her. I took my 2nd ex to a range once... JUST ONCE. (I suggested she begin with my Ruger Mark I (.22), but she insisted on shooting the Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special (cut back to 2½") because it was "cute". I warned her, and placed my body against the back of hers at the firing line) One round (even with the Pachmayer grips) and she was terrified. Tears were streaming down her face, and she was trembling like she had faced Satan himself! I had to reach around and physically remove the gun from her hands. Good luck, Ed! :D
Pax...

Good point. Use CCW as a gateway to OC. Some may never progress to OC, but CCW is still far more effective than bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Today ended up in Best Buy, Charleston and 215 no issues. Later went to the Galleria Mall spent several hours there. We were in the Kohls store for some time, walked by a security guard in a white shirt and said hi, he replied with the same. Later saw him and another security guard with a dark shirt talking and looking at me over the top of several racks of cloths. I had all ready mentally rehearsed what I was going to say; well, they never came over to talk to me.

Later had the white shirt guard walk by and twice for the dark shirt guard and no contact. It was great, no issues. We also went to Victoria Secret I was looking for some fancy laced drawers, no issue with the firearm there. Went to Fry’s as always no issue there. Ended the day taking my wife to the gourmet restraint on Blue Diamond near 1-15 called N and out never an issue there. Great day of OCing.

Well... I carried at the Mirage downtown with my family and while enjoying the dolphin and tiger exhibit we happened to hear a security guard call in MWAG. Security supervisor rolls up and proceeds to tell me that I'm illegal for why I'm doing. He was fixing to bounce us out when he realized that I was with the family, he escorts me back to the car, watches me put it away, and escorts me back to the exhibit. I talked to the manager of the hotel and he proceeds to tell me that "it is against state laws to carry a weapon on private property." Looks like it'll be awhile before they see me again...

I take it no one you encountered gained knowledge. Did you attempt to impart some better understanding of actual state laws to any of those involved?

Oh I did... It was almost like explaining Quantum Physics to a 3-year old. What's funny is that Metro PD was outside and they said NOTHING about it. They just looked at me and smiled and said "Nice gun...is it new?"

It may not have helped however, this would have been a great opportunity to of had a printed copy of Felid Maximus pamphlet which has the NRS.

The point is they won't care one way or another what the law actually is and nothing you say to policeman wantabe is going to change corp policy. Why argue with them? Even if you convince them there is no "law", you still are on your way out one way or another. Just consider it fun to ruffle their feathers from time to time. It's probably the only excitement they will have that night...

The rent-a-cop even said he was a cop and knew the law... That's what's funny!

I OC'd today at the Ron Paul event at American Shooters. Security (Secret Service?) was all around. They never batted an eye. No one in the considerable crowd cared that I had a gun on my hip. It was a good OC experience being in a friendly, liberty-minded gathering!

I saw a few other people OCing at the event, as well.

Ron walked through the crowd in the packed store shaking hands and signing his autograph. I was about 4 feet from him at one point. Way cool to finally see the man I admire so much in person!

After the event, I bought a gun belt and a mag carrier. None of the employees cared that I was OCing. The sales dude asked me how I liked my M&P compact.

Very glad to hear it. First time he has been here that I have had to miss it. I feel bad about not being there tonight but I will be at the Caucus in the morning to support him. I wish more of us who believe in the 2A understood that he is really the only candidate fully behind 2A.

They are used to seeing me in there. I hit it maybe twice a week on average.

Oh yeah. And not just the 2A. Honestly, there is not one position on government, economics, liberty, and foreign relations that Ron holds that I disagree with him about!

We needed this man leading this country a long time ago!

This (along with my reply) is what my wife received from guest services down at the Mirage a few days ago. Feel free to read up on it and let me know what you think...

Ms. McKenzie:

I was reading up on what you informed my wife a few days ago and I have to respectfully say that you may be wrong when you informed her that having firearms on your property is not allowed...

There are no signs on your property that state "no firearms are allowed", and per NRS 207.200 (Nevada state law), a sign on a private building saying no firearms are allowed does not necessarily make firearms illegal to have in any private building. The only way it would be illegal for me to have my firearm(s) there is if I am under the influence of alcohol (with a BAC of over 0.10) or if I am asked to leave, and I do not.

I have enclosed a copy of a guide regarding firearms and Nevada state laws. I feel that I have had my second amendment rights taken from me when I (along with my wife) cannot legally carry firearms and don't have a safer way to defend ourselves if the need arises.

The reason why I brought this issue up is because I was in your hotel a few days ago, and one of your security supervisors (I believe his name was Scott) informed me that it was 100% illegal for me to have my firearm there when there were NO signs up on ANY of your doors, or no firm information as to firearms being illegal in your buildings. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers were located right outside the main entrance (down by the 1-OAK club) and THEY informed me it WAS legal for me to enter your building, openly-carrying my firearm.

Please take a couple of minutes to read the enclosed form regarding the laws when it comes to having a firearm in Nevada.

I look forward to hearing back from you or any of your supervisors. Again, this response is not intended to be disrespectful whatsoever. I just want to make you all aware that openly-carrying a firearm on private property is completely legal under Nevada state law. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Subject: Firearms Policy

To whom it may concern,

I am going to be coming to the Mirage on business very soon and I am curious to know what your hotels policy on firearms is. I ask this because I legally open carry my gun and from what I have read Nevada law states there is no problem with me carrying as long as I am not in a school zone, federal property, or courthouse. My intention is not to cause any problems, I just want to follow the law and do what is within my legal right to do. Thank you for your time and any information that you can give me.

Megan

...I included a PDF copy of the guide that was put up on the pamphlet thread.

The bold text is factually incorrect, which is sadly important when dealing with the anti-gun crowd that thinks the law is on their side. Refusing to leave when asked makes your presence illegal, but the firearm has nothing to do with it.
