Today was my first day doing the open carry thing. I have to say I was a little nervous myself when I walked into the Tulalip Walmart and there was a Tulalip cruiser parked right out front with an officer in it.

Nothing happened is all there is to say. Got a few looks, but it was pretty much a non event. Hit a petco up there, and a few other places about, and no one seemed to pay attention to it. Wife said I got a few dirty looks from some women. *shrug*

I'm hooked now :)

Thanks for all the great info and support guys!

Right on Casey!!!!

You'll find that rather than negative encounters you'll have more of a chance to educate those who unaware of the legality. The overwhelming majority of people I have talked to in public are supportive. Even if they don't like guns and feel it's not for them.

Yea but that matters not. Their officers are commissioned and know the laws just the same.....wait maybe you will get harassed there then.

Seriously though they are not a bad group of guys.

But it would pay to know the Tulalip Tribal Laws on carry in prohibited places:

6.12.4 Carrying concealed weapon in a prohibited place.
1) A person commits the offense of carrying a concealed weapon in a prohibited place if he or she
purposely or knowingly carries a concealed weapon in:
a) a building owned or leased by the federal, state, local government, or Tribes or any governmental
entity;
b) a bank, credit union, savings and loan institution, or similar institution; or
c) a commercial establishment in which alcoholic beverages are sold, dispensed, and consumed.

2) It is not a defense that the person had the permission of the Tribal Court or a state permit to carry
a. concealed weapon.

Those in bold above are different than State Law and while non tribal members are not subject to punishment in Tribal Court, you could be detained, relieved of your weapon, and escorted off the "Res".

In the case of establishments where alcohol is served they make no differentiation as to where minors are allowed or not, just where alcohol is sold, dispensed, or consumed. That would cover places like the Casino, Burger Bob's, and Olive Garden if they choose to enforce. Just be aware.

As for Open Carry, the Tribe doesn't address the issue of Open Carry. For non-tribal members it may only mean again, disarmed and escorted off the reservation. It might be a big help to have a CPL on hand as they do recognize it and it seems to be the "exception" in all carry prohibitions.

Also note that car carry rules are different

6.12.5 Carrying handgun in occupant compartment of motor vehicle.
1) A person commits an offense under this section if he or she knowingly carries or bears a handgun,
pistol or revolver in any location within the occupant compartment of a motor vehicle.
2) The occupant compartment of a motor vehicle includes any place within a motor vehicle that is
accessible from the driver or passenger seats, including any glove or utility compartment, but does
not include a trunk that is not accessible to the occupant compartment.

ANY handgun, loaded or not, is illegal in a motor vehicle on the reservation unless locked in an inaccessible trunk. Again the CPL is an exception.

So, I am in the soup in my half ton Silverado without a CPL?

Remember the tribes have their own rules. some (like the Warm Springs in OR) state the rules only apply to enrolled members of the tribe, some (like the Colville) say their rules apply if you are out of your vehicle, (that is state law applies if you are in your car driving down the highway, but not in a reservation store) The Colville have their own "may issue" permit if you want to carry and you do a lot of business on the res. Other tribes have other rules. It is best to "know" (read crefully and understand) the tribes laws when you are on their res.

While the tribal police cannot put you in their jail for ignoring their tribal law, they will call the local Sheriff and have you removed from tribal land. There is a big flap over on this side, and in Idaho right now on just who has how much authority to do what to whom. I am sure they will get it worked out soon. But basically, as I understand it, as it is now, the Sheriff cannot arrest a tribal member while that member is on the res, and the res police cannot arrest a non-tribal member. They can detain you until LE of the proper authority arrive to take care of the problem though.

It's all good

Well I don't go to places that are restricted on the tribal law list there, and I have a CPL on top of everything, so I'm pretty much covered.

Thank you for sharing the information, I did some research ahead of time to make sure, and everything was on the up and up.

I did go into the McDonalds today on Everett and Broadway across from the QFC in Everett, and probably got the strongest reaction too date. All 2 days of my OC life :)

A few of the female employees actually let out an audible gasp and were staring at my hip. There was only one other customer in place. Then they all started looking at eachother like they didn't know if I was about to go medival on them or what. I calmly made my order and stood there for it. No issues after that.

Upon walking out the usual everett hood rat crew was hanging out at the outdoor tables. If you've spent anytime around N. Everett you know what I'm talking about. As I was getting in the car they asked (or more like yelled because I was about 30ft away) if I was a cop. I said NOPE, then they asked if I was security, and said Nope at that point too. Then the look on their face was funny. They were really confused.... Their expressions were something like "How come this crazy white dude is carrying a gun and he doesn't look like he's about to stick the place up."

At which point I talked with them and explained what was what. They were actually really cool about it, even the males extended their hands to shake after we were done talking. They won't be open carrying, I'm pretty sure of it after hearing why it wouldn't work for them lol. But they were still friendly none the less.

Hit a bike shop, and Safeway as well....No issue.

Probably not on the Tulalip Reservation. Kind of an interesting mix there. If someone is stopped by a Tribal Cop, and they are a Tulalip tribe member, then the Cop is a Tribal Cop. If someone stopped is not a tribal member, then the cop is a Sheriff's Deputy. They carry dual commissions. They'll enforce the rules according to your status.

If you are a tribal member you could be in the "poop soup". If not, it just has to be unloaded and your good to go. From what I've seen on the Tulalip Reservation, and I'm there regularly, the Tribal Police don't hassle non tribal people much. Those that are are the ones that often deserve by just being horse's butts.

6.12.1. CARRYING CONCEALED WEAPON.
1) A person commits the offense of carrying a concealed weapon by knowingly carrying or bearing a dirk, dagger, pistol, revolver, slingshot, sword cane, billy club, knuckles made of any metal or other hard substance, knife having a blade at least 4 inches long, non-safety type razor, or any other deadly weapon which is wholly or partially covered by the clothing or wearing apparel of the person carrying the weapon, or is carried any place within the occupant compartment of a motor vehicle.

This part is the only thing that kind of de-rails your thought Navy. I would be interested to know that tribes laws on OC. I know it use to be in COlville they preferred OC ot CC becuase they were atleast aware of your being armed, and could keep tabs on you if they wanted. The OP stated he was OC and never mentioned CC unless I missed something.
