Who needs a gun near ODU ... again?

Yet another fatality near ODU. Funny how the BGs seem to gravitate there. I wonder why they prey on college students; they probably don't have really expensive stuff which could be fenced. Could it be that they know that the students are likely to be completely defenseless? Hmmmm.

What I find most crazy after reading the story is that it sounds like more often than not, the suspects are students themselves.

I saw one student on the news commenting that ODU needs to step up their patrols. Wrong, he is off campus and needs to protect himself. You see what depending on others for your protection did for the one that was killed.

That didn't come out right. I meant it more as a joking jab that all I get is "Daily Announcements" and "Timely Safety Warnings".

... about the news article, which said that the victim, Christopher Cummings, was the nephew of Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD):

"It is not against the law for an adult citizen to carry a firearm anywhere on the campus of ODU. However, students, faculty, and staff are all prohibited from doing so as a condition of attendance and employment. It is ironic that one must surrender Second Amendment rights in order to attend an institution which purportedly highly values First Amendment rights.

If a student cannot arm himself on campus, then he is effectively unable to arm himself near campus, either at home or while transiting from his home to classes. Every robber, rapist, burglar, and home invader in Hampton Roads knows this.

As a result, ODU and the surrounding neighborhoods are target rich environments for criminals who prey on the defenseless. No amount of campus police, escort services, or “blue boxes” will prevent the continued victimization of students, who are all but guaranteed to be unarmed and defenseless. The President of ODU, who can change this policy with the stroke of a pen, has turned a deaf ear to this issue and rejected a petition to rescind this prohibition. Step up the patrols? Someone should ask these dimwits 'how many patrols would give you the same assurance of safety as having your own bodyguard or dog or gun?'

Step up patrols. By whom? If LEOs, they have no duty to protect individuals. If stuff happens the victim is often proned out and S&C, too. Campus cops? How well trained are they? Have patrols ever stopped any assault or do they arrive to sweep up the blood?

They don't want the truth to be known - it doesn't fit their agenda.

Seems that they (university administrators) would rather you die to support their faulty conclusions and the liberal bias in the media stands firmly behind them.

My comments on the V-P blog have generated several replies. Not surprisingly, the sheep are bleating loudly :cuss: are clueless about the nature of the wolves and have no use for the sheepdogs :shocker:.

At the considerable risk of getting sick to my stomach, I quit reading the comments after the first few.

Just as I thought, ODU tried to absolve themselves of any responsibility:
"We will also continue to urge city officials and landlords on additional safety measures for the off-campus neighborhood where this and other crimes occurred this semester," Broderick said.

ODU Emails

Norfolk Police are investigating a shooting that occurred around 5 a.m. June 10 in the 800 block of 42nd Street, between Killam and Colley Avenues. Norfolk Police have not released any details at this point. The campus will be updated as soon as more information is learned.

Norfolk Police have identified the victim of this morning's shooting as 20-year-old Christopher Cummings. Christopher was a junior Old Dominion University student from Northern Virginia who was studying criminal justice.

The police have not released the name of a second victim who was taken to the hospital. No additional details about the incident were given.

While we do not yet know all the details of yesterday morning's off-campus shooting, we do know the Old Dominion University community lost a bright and talented student and another student is recovering in the hospital.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Christopher S. Cummings, a junior criminal justice major from Northern Virginia. By all accounts, Christopher was a friendly and popular student and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Words cannot express our grief at the senseless loss of such a bright, young man.

Members of the university community have been in touch with the Cummings family and the university wishes to continue to provide support for Christopher's friends, classmates and faculty. The Counseling Center staff is available to assist any student, faculty or staff members who are having difficulty. Please take a moment to reach out to your friends, classmates and colleagues and show concern during this time.

ODU Police and other university officials are working with Norfolk Police to assist in their investigation in this off-campus crime. While I understand the university community's anger over this terrible act and frustration at the few details released, please understand that police investigations take time. We have and will continue to update the campus with information as soon as we receive it from police. Additionally, if anyone has any information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, please call police immediately. That piece of information could help identify the individual or individuals responsible for this crime.

As you know, the university has been working with a national security consultant and we are putting into place her recommendations. We have hired additional officers, enhanced the lighting in the garages, and installed more "blue light" emergency phones. Work is underway on significantly increased use of video surveillance and a campus-wide review of lighting. We will also continue to urge city officials and landlords on additional safety measures for the off-campus neighborhood where this and other crimes occurred this semester.

In the coming days, I will continue to update the campus on university and police efforts. In the meantime, I ask that each of us offers solace and support to other members of our ODU community as we struggle to comprehend this senseless act.

It is indeed a sad happening... and could have been prevented with some common-sense changes (within the bounds of the law).

As a Marylandistani, I am interested to hear the uncle's response to this. Rep. Cummings is held in fairly high regard in the House, and could greatly influence the RKBA arguments both here and nationally, in either direction.

I am a recent ODU Grad, in which I attended night class. I received these warnings almost daily. I chose to carry a knife and flashlight to and from the car, leaving my revolver locked in the vehicle. There are many dark places on campus and I always see people walking by themselves. I refuse to be a victim, even if I cannot have my gun with me.

I wish that ODU would allow students to carry on campus if they have a concealed carry permit. As for the security, I noticed that they are too busy writing parking tickets in order to help raise revenue for the school; and when the were not they were hanging around in Webb Center watching television.

Well, ok. That was weird. Post got eaten.

Effectively allowing only faculty and a small percentage of upperclassmen the privilege of defending themselves.

This is one instance where perks-for-permits just does not make any sense.

Scary stuff. My son just finished his 2nd year at ODU and was renting a place off campus just two blocks away from this shooting. ODU has a nice campus, however, it is surrounded by some of the worst sections of the Norfolk area. Due to his age and ODU policy, it worries me daily about his safety, as he is unable to protect himself legally from the unlawful criminal!

My daughter just finished her first year at ODU and is attending summer classes, too. She complains almost DAILY that she can't carry on campus. They REALLY need to get Campus Carry PASSED and quit this silly touchy-feely crap about "more police and better security". I know I'm "preaching to the choir" here... I just get really pissed off every time I hear about another college kid getting shot/stabbed/mugged, etc. when most of these crimes COULD have been prevented!!!

What will it take to STOP the silliness???
