Report: Acting ATF director likely to resign

USA today just reported that he will resign within the next two weeks. This is likely due to the uproar over Operation Fast and Furious.

Now all that needs to be done is defund and disband that organization.

Scapegoat.

If the investigators are smart they'll realize this is just DOJ running interference. Sources have indicated this runs right to the white house.

They know. Issa directly asked during the hearing if this is politically motivated. First the head of the AFT. Then the Assistant Attorney General. Then Holder. And if we are really lucky, Obummer himself.

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R.-Calif.) told CNSNews.com in an interview that he believes the Justice Department is covering up information relevant to a congressional investigation of an operation in which the department knowingly allowed intermediaries of Mexican drug cartels to purchase guns at licensed firearms dealers in the United States and then get away without being arrested or the guns being retrieved.

Last December, two of those guns ended up at the scene of the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was killed by alleged agents of the Mexican drug cartels.

Issa pointed to two things he says indicates a Justice Department cover up. First, he cites a letter that Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich, head of the Justice Department’s office of legislative affairs, sent to Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb. 4, 2011. Issa characterizes that letter as a “lie.”

Secondly, Issa says the Justice Department made excessive and unjustifiable redactions in documents it provided to his committee.

Additionally, Issa says he does not believe Attorney General Eric Holder testified accurately in the Judiciary Committee on May 3, when he told Issa (who also serves on that committee) that he had only learned of the gun-running operation—called “Operation Fast and Furious"--a few weeks before that.

Holder needs to go. He is the US AG, that makes him the head of DOJ and defacto head of the BATFE the other guy (what's his name meddlesome, toast or mudd....) is an errand boy, high grade no doubt, but an errand boy none-the-less.

BATFE needs to be defanged and lose it's police powers. Everytime the BATFE is behind some scheme or other to entrap someone, (rather than do real police work and catch real bad guys) innocent people die. That bunch can't even seem to get errand boy right.

I musta missed a turn somewhere. I thought BATFE was in the Treasury Dept.

When did it change?

The BATFE has been shuffled back and forth in the Federal Government since it's creation as the "Revenue Laboratory" in 1889, under Treasury.

In 1930, it was moved under the Justice Department.

In 1933, it was made a division of the FBI.

After the repeal of the Volsted Act in 1933, this unit was transferred back under Treasury.

in 1942, the regulation and enforcement of firearms law was put into the hands of the Unit (still under Treasury)

In the early 1950s, they was given jurisdiction over tobacco (under the IRS)

The passing of the 1968 Gun Control Act changed their name to ATF, still under the IRS.

In 1972, ATF was given status as a separate bureau under Treasury, autonomous from IRS.

In the wake of 9/11, Bush signed over ATF from Treasury to the DOJ. However, the task of actually collecting revenues and enforcing federal regulations regarding alcohol and tobacco was handed over to a new division of Treasury called the "Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). So essentially, ATF existed solely (since 9/11) to harass gun owners, trip up licensed firearms dealers, and act as a goon squad for anti-gun bureaucrats against unpopular citizens, organizations, and religious groups...

So judging form the history of ATF, either EVERYONE wants them (and so there is constant jockeying to gain control over their jurisdictions) or NOBODY wants them (and so there is constant jockeying to push them off on someone else...)

I've worked for many Federal Agencies over the years, and have a fair amount of insight into how power is shuffled, pursued, and grabbed in DC--and based on my knowledge and experience with the folks "inside the beltway", I would lean heavily toward the second option as the reason behind ATFs gypsy-like affiliations...

I speculate that after this whole "GunWalker" thing pans out, the only Federal organization who will want to be affiliated with BATFE is DHS because BATFE's rap sheet so closely matches the stated goals of DHS, and, well, birds of a feather...

I don't think this is such a big deal to Obama. He wants Andrew Traver as the head of BATFE. The now acting head Ken Melson would have had to step aside anyway if Traver had been approved. Obama can now name Traver as acting head of the BATFE and he still gets the guy he wanted in the first place. I don't think this is the monumental win many may think it is.

Did a search for Traver to get a little background on the guy and came across this video.

Most of you have probably already seen it. They are trying to prove that AK-47s are impossible to control. How do they do this? By giving the weapon a reporter that has clearly never fired a rifle before and let her fire it. What happens? She fires from the hip and appears to not even try to control the recoil. :banghead:

It should come as no surprise that the agency that put out the report is the local Chicago NBC news station.

Yeah, that is impeccable logic. A battle rifle designed by one of the most brilliant weapons designers of the 20th century, capable of functioning in ANY environment, which is supremely reliable, designed to be used by millions of illiterate farmhands and peasants all over the world, and has successfully been used to topple governments, expand the USSR for nearly 50 years, and hand the Russians their ass (in Afghanistan) and the USA it's ass TWICE (Viet Nam and the Gulf War), is "impossible to control".

I bet there are a lot of men who's names are on that big black wall in Washington DC who might disagree with that...

Wow. What an idiot of a reporter, not to mention the local Chicago NBC new station.

Not because she's an imbecile with a weapon, but because they showed two clips of one person (possibly two different people) holding it properly and managing to nail the target, immediately before the reporter took the firearm and sprayed the entire hillside.

Not to mention they are showing a full auto weapon which is totally illegal in Illinois.
