Use the maps to decide how you will carry during your trip.

If you have a Conceald Handgun Permit this site is useful:

VA honors Minnesota's permits but you still have to keep GFSZ in mind when traveling to a different state. VA CHP holders can ignore most of the GFSZ restrictions (the ones not in VA law).

I always find it frustrating how each state has different rules. For example on my way to Florida I can OC in NC & GA if it is clearly visible, but in SC and FL it has to be in the glove box. (GA can be glovebox too). Since I have a CHP the only state I have to worry about is GA but I can OC in my car as long as it is visible or in the glovebox. In GA I don't think I can OC outside the car though unless I had a GA license. Sometimes it takes a couple readings to understand all the nuances.

One thing to consider if you will be OC-ing in other states is reseach which ones have preemption or not. VA is good in that the localities can't create stronger laws than the state government but NC doesn't so each county could have different laws. Check out http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/

You can carry concealed on your person in your car in South Carolina with a Virginia CHP. If you have no permit, then it should be in your glove box.

One would think that the further south you go, the more lenient the carry laws would be for both open and concealed carry but that's not necessarily true. Virginia is the most lenient of the Southern states in these regards which makes it easier for our residents and those who visit.

Please enjoy your time here. Where are you planning to visit and stay?

Listing of states of which Virginia will grant recognition to valid permit holders:
Minnesota
Washington
Although Virginia will grant recognition, these states may not authorize Virginia permit holders to possess a firearm in their state. You will need to contact each state to determine if they will recognize your Virginia permit.

What you said about GA is true. You definitely cannot OC outside of your vehicle. GA is my home state, and I am ashamed to say is not carry friendly at all. Great for a lot of other things, just not guns for what ever stupid reason. Even with a GAFL (GA firearms license) you still do not have no where near as much freedom carrying as you do in VA even without a CHP, which is sad. But as the law reads downt there, carrying a firearm in a vehicle it must be in plain sight or in the glove box. I am not familiar at all with case law there to know what an acceptable definition of "plain sight" is. I do know that growing up my father always told me that it meant on the seat or on the dash board so I would be careful.
