Detroit's Murder Rate Rising

2011 on pace toward most homicides per capita in a decade

Homicides in the city of Detroit are up 15 percent from the same time last year and are on pace to reach the highest per-capita rates in a decade when the city's declining population is factored into the equation.

According to police, the city has logged 182 homicides as of July 10. If the projections hold, the city could record 350 homicides this year.

That compares with the 366 homicides recorded in 2003.

But at that time, Detroit had at least another 205,000 people than today. The population has dropped 25 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to the U.S. census, with additional declines projected.

Last year, homicides dipped to 310, down from 379 in 2009.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee attributed some of the violence to the usual struggles facing urban areas — narcotics and gang activities. But what's troublesome this year, he said, is how people are resorting more to firearms in quarrels, and the number of victims of their own "risky behavior."

We clearly need to take action. Let's first start with banning open carry, because as we all know, the sight of our guns is the reason for all the gun violence. Then when that doesn't work we take away all CPL's that way no one can carry.

Maybe it is why Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee appeared on TV to state that Open Carry is OK in Detroit - They know they cannot protect everyone, everywhere, and at all times.

It's complicated yet also fairly simple.

We're outsourcing jobs as fast as possible, choosing to buy as much cheap imported crap as possible, including ungodly amounts of gasoline and diesel. We've even got laws to reinforce this. At the same time we're fighting wars we can't even pay for, nevermind the politics of it all. To ice the cake the USA has a lot of people who are very poorly educated, and are no longer able to find living wage jobs at factories because of their own decision to support the chinese. Our entire economy is collapsing around us, and meanwhile our government is trying to spend its way out with almost no attempts to actually fix things. Honestly we're pretty well screwed.

When you consider a place like Detroit, or Flint, or Pontiac, the harsh truth is that many racist urbanites would prefer it to stay screwed up and therefor contained in their little selfish minds. Certainly few outside people are in a rush to invest in the city, aside from the occasional trip down town or to Wayne State. It's left with a little legit business here and there, and a ton of money making through the illegal drug trade. Considering what's happening to our entire country, they've got no direction to go but to get worse, just like most other places.

I don't recall him stating that OC is ok. He did say something about folks getting upset.
We need more OCers in the D! Thats what the Chief should be saying on the news!
