The title of the thread is from Chicago's "Saturday," although these took place yesterday, on a Friday, but it felt like a Saturday, so...

My son and I headed downtown (Colorado Springs), as it was one of the things I promised we'd do before he headed back home. He was hungry for ice cream, but we'd just eaten lunch, so I stopped by Acacia Park, as I knew he'd have a blast in the fountain while I sat and read my book.

The benches were full, so I asked a gentleman reading his own book on one of the benches if it was ok if I join him. He said, "Sure! Have a seat - my name's M." I noticed he'd noticed I was OCing my 9 mm, but he didn't skip a beat. We didn't do much reading, as he was just a couple of years older than I, and we both had some interesting backgrounds. As we talked, I noticed a couple other people walking past noticed I was carrying, but all took it in stride.

After about 45 minutes, we headed to the breakfast food place across the street from 1st Pres, on Bijou and Nevada, but discovered they had no ice cream and were cash only. They recommended Josh and John's, a block past the bus stationon Pikes Peak between Tejon and Nevada, so I fed the meter and my son and I headed down the street.

As we strode in front of the bus station, where some buses load from the street next to the hot dog vender, a few people caught sight of my firearm, and it was clear they followed me with their eyes. I got the impression the sort of folks who take buses tend to be a bit more street savvy than your average Walmart shopper.

Josh and John's was great as usual, and we enjoyed our ice creams and Colorado root bear out front while sitting at the tables. One of the Spring's finest (a transportation sequestering QA specialist) was strolling along, dispensing a ticket or two, and she spotted my firearm as she passed. She simply smiled and said, "Hello" to which I replied, "How are you this afternoon, Ma'am?"

Afterwards, we headed North on Tejon back to where I'd parked at Acacia Park, but my son spotted a jewelry store and wanted to see if they made their own jewelry (they did), so we spent about five minutes inside while he conversed with the attendant. When we were through, we strolled back through Acacia Park to where we'd parked, and left the area.

It was an absolutely beautiful day yesterday, and incident-free during the 2+ hours I OC'd throughout the downtown Colorado Springs area. :)

Howdy Amigo!
Sounds like a typical OC day in Colorado Springs.
One thing is certain, you surely didn't OC in Chicago or the story would be completely different!

I spent several hours running erands yesterday in Aurora, Green Valley Ranch, etc.
More and more, as I gain experience and confidence, I am getting accustomed to OC'ing.

The difference is your OC experience took place in a really pretty area, while mine was more urbane.

I do not know if things have changed, but Acacia Park has always had an unsavory element.
I'd have my head on a swivel there! Oh, wait... I always do when I OC!

You guys are too worried about others. I have been carrying long enough it is habit and I feel naked without my sidearm. I put it on every morning habitually. I carry everywhere I go, including Chase Manhattan bank this morning.I only take it off in a few places and then my holster is still on. A movie theater because I don't' want to scare kids is one. Stop worrying about people. They will get over it. I find a lot will stop me and ask me what kind and caliber of gun I'm carrying and many ask me if you need a license to carry. As I told my wife the other night, I'm corrupting the springs. :)

"Saturday" is a song by' Chicago.' Has nothing to do with the gulag.

Howdy Gunslinger!
Of course. Yes, that's obvious. But you may have missed my jab at the ironic.
Chicago (the band, named for a city that is notoriously anti 2a) used as reference to a day of enjoying 2a rights in a city where the freedom to do so is rarely (if ever) questioned, much less challenged. Try that in Chicago though... Katy bar the door... the SWAT team's a'comin'!

Don't you think that is just a wee bit ironic? With my eye constantly open to the comedic possibilities of things, I thought it was hilarious and believe the OP was actually having a bit of fun at the expense of said gulag!

Then again, I could be reading too much into this, which sometimes happens, like when I read War and Peace. But that's another thread! LOL!

Therein lies the point! While you have been doing so long enough, what about folks who are just starting out. People like... hmmm... I dunno....
Me, f'rinstance?

Terrific. I am delighted you have been OC'ing long enough to become relaxed and perhaps experienced enough that you have forgotten those early days when you started OC'ing. But for some, it is entirely a new experience and we haven't yet developed that sense of being secure in our right to carry. Those of us just starting out may wonder when that awkward or even troublesome LEO encounter may be coming along. For that matter, any LEO encounter at all may prove uncomfortable for the new OC'er until it happens. Until then, they are in unfamiliar territory and do not know precisely how they will handle the situation. They can rehearse till the cows come home, but when reality comes their way, the situation may be completely outside what they imagined it would be.

I'm pretty sure that after awhile, I'll be just as confident as you in OC'ing, especially in the Springs. We have some jurisdictions around here that ain't nearly so friendly to OC'ers. Denver, obviously, but there is also Lakewood where an OC'er was approached by an officer with his pistol drawn. What was he doing to deserve an armed confrontation? Watering his dog? Are you kidding me? Aside from that, the officer had no RAS or PC, but pulled his weapon on him. Really?

It is all kinds of a warm fuzzy feeling to live in a city like Colorado Springs and a county like El Paso, where I am sure you'd never be approached by an officer with his pistol drawn simply because you are OC'ing. Meanwhile, back out here, it has happened to one of our Colorado contingent. What is someone new to OC'ing going to do in order to prepare for that type of encounter?

Point being, when you started out OC'ing, I am sure you may have felt some apprehension. I am fairly new to OC'ing, and have some apprehension. How long you took to get beyond that apprehension is unknown to me. How long it will take for me to get beyond apprehension is unknown to me as well. But every day I carry, the more confident I become. It gets easier.

Just be patient while others gain the experience and poise that you've already attained.
And bear in mind, newcomers are arriving daily!
So threads like this one are helpful and give them encouragement to boldly go armed where they've never gone before.

I don't really think about it anymore. If anyone ask's I explain to them that it is my Colorado American Express. I don't leave home without it. Had a nice conversation with one of the greeters last week at the Walmart here in town and she mentioned she has seen more than one or two people carrying. As we talked one of Douglas County's finest was walking in, he slowed down and asked what I was carrying. Nice coversation, no issues. That whole north Aurora, Green Valley ranch area is confuseing so I am always cautious up there. Where does Denver start and stop. I know the airport and the Pena is all City County of Denver. After that no real issues. Enjoy.

Howdy Flyer!
You just pegged me to where I live. I am smack in that area where boundaries are a bit hazy.
Just off Tower road is a shopping center with a Walmart, Home Depot, Office Depot, Best Buy and some other stores and restaurants. Until recently, I avoided the area because I thought it was part of Denver. Then when coming home from work one evening, I discovered that Aurora reaches up to around 43rd. When travelling Tower, look at the street signs. Denver has their logo on the signs in Green Valley Ranch, and so does Aurora. So quite literally, you can be going about your OC'ing day, minding your own business and peacably obeying the law, then cross the street and violate Denver's territory and end up with a nasty confrontation.

It certainly can be perilous to carry near their borders, that's a certainty. But with a CCW, it really has lost much of its intimidation value. If I think I'm in Denver territory, I simply cover my sidearm with my shirt. There, all better and nicely legal!

Denver's territory reaches out to the airport, and covers a chunk of territory including most of Green Valley Ranch. I know it runs from around 43rd north to just beyond Pena, then around maybe 88th or so, you'll see a sign stating you've entered Commerce City's jurisdiction. At least that's so on Tower Road.

Thanks for the discussion. Much obliged.
Carry on and stay safe out there!

It's still there, particularly on a nice warm afternoon where the drunks could sleep it off in the shade of the trees, as some, three of them, were doing.

Nope. You nailed it. :)

I'm not worried at all. Sometimes, jhco50, we who've been around firearms all our lives enjoy posting our experiences for the benefit of either new members, or the 5 times as many lurkers as there are members.
