An armed 19-year-old intruder was shot and killed inside the garage of a home on the northern outskirts of Salinas Wednesday, Monterey County Sheriff's Department deputies said.

A Sheriff's dispatcher said the shooter's mother called 911 to report the confrontation at 12:34 p.m.
The shooter appears to be the son of the owners of the home on the 200 block of Pingree Way, the dispatcher added.

What caused the outbreak of gunfire was not immediately clear.
"There was a confrontation, there was an exchange of gunfire [in the garage], one is deceased," said Sheriff's Sgt. Terry Kaiser.
