Polarized Anti-HEV polycarbonate prescription lenses in ANSI Z87-2 frames makes me a happy man. The irony that they cost more than most of my guns is not lost on me.

You do realize that aside from the prescription part, a simple pair of 100% UV-blocking polycarbonate lenses of various tints meeting stringent safety requirements can be had online for around $40?

In fact, at $40, they the most expensive shooting safety glasses on the price sheet. The cheapest ones are $6. If you'd prefer more styles, though, check here.

My favorites, around $6 each. They comply with ANSI Z87+ and CE-EN-166.

The prescription part is the key. I bought some Beretta brand shooting glasses for $16, and I really don't like thim. They don't fit well over my eyeglasses or under my earmuffs. I never wear them. I instead wear a pair of safety glasses I got out of a dollar bargain bin. I've done without sunglasses for about two years. Maybe three. My regular glasses got so scratched I could barely see out of them and they finally broke. I got my backup pair out of the safe and found they were even less sratched but the scrip was out of date. Replaced those for $50 at Zenni optical online.

I looked at sunglasses at Zenni, and none of them were safety rated. Looked at their safety glasses and none were sunglass style. Maybe could have gotten a couple of pairs, but I really wanted a pair of all-in-ones. As it is, I have to switch between my eyeglasses and scrip sunglasses. Really don't want to take a bunch of them to the range that I have to switch between for seeing, driving, and shooting.

I looked around for other prescription safety sunglasses at a good price and the only thing I could find were welding glasses that either weren't my style or didn't give the close wraparound protection I was looking for. I even went to a specialist scrip sports eyewear store, and walked right out again. They wanted twice what safevision.net was looking to charge me. I even looked at safety frames that could take a prescription lens, if I could get someone to do it. But that was looking like more trouble than it was worth. I.e. the shops were not going to accept someone else's scrip or wanted to charge stupid expensive prices for just the lenses on top of the "custom" work on an outside frame. At those prices, it was just easier to go with where I got them.

So, yeah, they were pricey, but they weren't an umpulse. And don't worry, my guns are comparitively inexpensive to others.

I should also note for anyone going down this route that my high astigmatism is what caused the most trouble. I actually have zero distance correction. In fact, not only did I have the usual astigmatism lens issues, but I had to pay a premium for it being so high. I couldn't get the original frame I wanted because they can't make a lens for my scrip that bends in the wrap style. These still give me the coverage without losing peripheral. If you just need reading glass type magnification, I did see some more affordable scrip safety sunglasses in standard magnifications, but don't recall where.

I understand. I'm sorry I was being insensitive on that point.

No biggie. You didn't hurt my feelings. Well, except for insinuating that I might not be the biggest cheap bastard in Colorado. I largely hold the same attitude though. I don't know who the people paying full price on this stuff are, but they are insane.

I largely hold the same attitude though. I don't know who the people paying full price on this stuff are, but they are insane.

Same. I really wish I could turn back the clock 22 years and live far more frugally than I did. If I'd done what a friend of mine had done, I might even have had enough to own my own house by now.

If I ever run into my 20 year old self, I'm going to throttle him. More for missing out on the whole cougar hunting thing than the money he ripped me off of. He was a pretty frugal guy.

Although, I will say if you bag a loaded cougar, your money woes will be at an end.
