LYNCHBURG --
An assault on a Lynchburg College student left the campus on lockdown for more than an hour Monday night as police searched for a suspect.
According to the college’s security alert, a female student was walking in the 400 block of Lakewood Street when a man jumped out from behind a parked car and grabbed her from behind at about 10:30 p.m. The woman turned around and the man grabbed her by the throat.
The student kneed her attacker in the groin and he let go and ran off in the direction of Thomas Road, said Bob Driskill, director of campus security for Lynchburg College.
Driskill said he does not believe the man was a student but said he may be a resident of neighborhoods around the campus.
“She gave a good, detailed description but we were unable to locate him,” Driskill said.
The woman, while upset, was calm and able to provide a complete description of the suspect, Driskill said. Although she had some marks on her throat, the victim was not physically hurt in the attack.
Driskill said eight different messages were sent to students alerting them of the attack, the lockdown and various safety procedures. The lockdown was lifted just after midnight.
The campus alert system got word of the attack and the suspect’s description out quickly, Driskill said. The attack happened at 10:38 p.m. and the first alert went out seven minutes later.
“Safety is a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week, 365 word around here,” said John Eccles, vice president and dean for student development.
Eccles said the challenge on campus is to keep safety in the forefront for students and faculty so they feel comfortable on campus.

Lynchburg College Security offered these safety tips:

- Call campus security at (434) 544-5555 if you see anyone checking doorknobs, looking into rooms or simply looking like they do not belong on campus.
