I was escorted out of Willis-Knighton North Hospital today by 3 officers. They were polite, professional and apologetic!

My wife and I had been up there to see her mom who is undergoing rehab from a stroke she had last week and we were up there bringing her some clothes and visiting. We hadn't been there very long when I left my bag and gun in the room and wheeled out in the hall looking for a bathroom. In the hall I ran into an officer and asked him if he knew where the restrooms were and he replied that he didn't and I jokingly asked "Well what good are ya?" ;) He kinda laughed said "I sure don't mean to be intrusive here, we had a report of a gentleman in a wheelchair in a green shirt with a gun in a bag, would that be you sir?" I replied yes sir, it's in my bag in my mother-in-laws room right there..." He said "Well our policy, do you have a permit and everything?" Me "Yes sir, I do."
NOTE: I was Open Carrying and I do have a permit but as of last month, it is no longer valid for Concealed Carry for me in LA but I was legal a now wasn't the time for picking nits.
The officer continued: "We would appreciate it if you would take it out to your vehicle." Me: "OK." End of story!

Well, not quite but that was the meat of it! The officer I met 1st was VERY apologetic for everything and saw to it that they gave me a ride to my car and loaded my wheelchair in it for me. They did ask my name, weight and age but never asked for my ID and I gave them the info without question. A recording of the events above is right here: http://herohog.com/audio/20110904OCStop.mp3

The Shreveport PD was polite, professional and handled this very well im my view. I have no complaints.

Their policy is that citizens be disarmed?
Unless there's a law (depending on state law, could include you being notified of hospital policy), the policy of the PD has no force.

And why on earth would they need any info about you, let alone your weight?!?!

And how did they know you had a gun in a bag?? Ever find out who has X-ray vision & reported a non-crime, wasting police resources?

I was confused about that myself!

As to the bag, a picture is worth a thousand words:

I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm not surprised. All the hospitals in this region are anti-gun. There are only two businesses in Texarkana (TX) with valid PC 30.06 notices that I'm aware of, and one of them in Christus St. Michael Hospital. (The other is Red River Federal Credit Union.)

Your other choices down there are Schumpert (another Christus property; they all ban guns), or LSUS (banned by law). Didn't Doctors close down?

Anyway, when a man recently walked through the ER at St. Michael carrying his keys and phone in his left hand, an employee thought it was a gun and freaked out. They locked down the hospital and called in the SWAT team and searched room by room. About an hour later they found him sitting in the cafeteria, where he'd gone to buy lunch. There was no gun, of course.

Your "RIGHT" to open carry does NOT exist on "private" property!

Some rights are superceded [sp?] by private property rights, some are not.
I don't understand why 1A rights & even created special classes of people are protected against certain actions on private property but 2A rights aren't.

You: "Officer since you are being so nice about disarming a disabled person, making me utterly DEFENSELESS, how about being my personal bodyguard while I'm here and while you're at it pushing me around in the chair?".

Never know. It could work. :)

There are indeed limitations on your 1A rights on private property - try getting up on a soap box in a mall or retail establishment w/o their express authorization.

I don't believe he ever claimed it did.
Then I guess the next question would be: did he know or presume that it would be against that establishments policy to restrict the open carrying of firearms by private persons?

There is nothing to indicate the hospitals POLICY that no guns are allowed on their property. I ALWAYS make sure to look for the sinage that can legally restrict my carrying when I enter a place of business. I even verified with the officer that there is nothing to indicate that this would be an issue. A security person, no longer in uniform, who worked there was leaving as I was entering and reported me.

Maybe I'm wrong but I guess the bold part about leaving the gun in the room got to me....I would never leave my handgun in a room in public whether it was with a relative or not. I wouldn't let it out of my possession. Especially since I work in a hospital and know how many people go in and out of rooms all the time. Did this raise red flags with anyone else?

With my Wife and Mother-in-law. I'm not stupid! :banghead:
Not just laying out anywhere unattended! Give me a break.

never said you were...my mindset is that it is my handgun and if it's not in my possession and something happens....it's still my fault.

My wife is quite competent with a gun and at least as good a shot as I am. Why are you picking nits over nothing?

He never said he left it unattended - know both Hero and his wife. They make a formidable team!

BTW: The reason I left it behind any was the fact that there were a bunch of cops roaming the hall and I didn't see any need in "asking for issues" and with that many armed cops around, there was no way I was drawing a gun in THAT crowd anyway plus the fact that I was only going just down the hall to pee anyway.

Is this in fact a "privately own and operated" hospital? I know that our local hospital is a public hospital, owned and operated by the local taxpayers. I see it on my real estate taxes every year... Does the state of Louisiana give the hospital district (if that is what it is) the right to make such policies?

Doesn't matter if it's private or not when it comes to polices. I work for the Baton Rouge General health system. Both our hospitals, in Mid-city and the one off Blue Bonnet ave, have No Weapons policies. So does Our Lady of the Lake and their parent system. Earl K Long is a state owned charity hospital and weapons are banned by law there. In fact, I know of no hospital system in the greater Baton Rouge area which does not have a No Guns/Weapons policy.
