Man Threatens Utility Crew With Gun

"What should have been a routine power check turned into a frightening experience for one utility crew from California on Monday morning, said Connecticut State Police.

The out of state contractors were hired by CL&P to assist in the restoration process after Tropical Storm Irene. According to the press release, they were conducting service outage checks in the town of Brooklyn when they approached a home on Bailey Street.

Police said the homeowner confronted the contractors, pointed a firearm in their direction, and ordered them off of his property.
The homeowner then followed the contractors off of the property and they immediately notified the Connecticut State Police. Officers from Troop D responded to the scene and were able to locate the homeowner and the firearm.

Police said Kyle Wojcik, 30, was taken into custody. He is being charged with second-degree threatening and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Wojcik is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday."


Threatened? It sounded as if he asked politely.....

Poor guy will now have to argue whether the alleged threats were serious, and whether a reasonable person would take them seriously enough to be threatened....

Of course he was within his rights.

Private Property owner tells them to get out at then GET OUT!

Hmm it does say "in their direction" and not "at" them - need more info

I read comments from his neighbor.

Seems there is a lot more to this than being reported.

New Jersey plates, no call from CL&P, three guys walking around his property.

He asks for ID, they produce none, but wave a map of Brooklyn. He asks again, no ID.

Their fault.

I'm with the property owner on this one.

You people are all jumping the gun. This article doesn't have enough information to make a real judgement. Critical but missing information is:

1) were the men wearing ID
2) were the trucks marked and were they obviously utility trucks. (boom trucks vs just pickup trucks)
3) were the men walking around the house looking in windows, or did they just check the meter and then attempt to leave
4) did the property owner first tell the men to leave without brandishing. (By law they must comply)
5) Did the men comply? (If they didn't, CT law explicitly says that you can use force (including deadly force).

All of this makes up the totality of the situation. Without it, nobody can make a real judgement. Based on thses missing facts we could have two completely different situations:

1) After being caught looking into the windows of his home, men who arrived in unmarked pickup trucks refuse provide ID, then give the man trouble about leaving his property - In this case the man is clearly justified in using force to remove them from his property.

2) Men in boom trucks with logo coveralls and visible IDs attempt to check his meter but are greeted by a man with a gun telling them to get off his property - In this scenario, the man is clearly NOT justified and is behaving in a criminal way.


Time will tell. Don't rush to judgement.
