Good thing the students weren't armed

I just received a lovely email from VCU, quoted verbatim below. Glad I'll be walking a block away from this intersection tonight on my way home from work, unarmed thanks to campus policy, because its safer that way.

VCU Police report that two students were robbed at gunpoint and describe the suspects as two black males with handguns. The robbery was reported to VCU Police this afternoon, and this notice and an investigation followed in a timely manner. Richmond Police are leading the investigation. Police advise students to use caution when traveling after dark, to be aware of surroundings and to use the VCU Escort Service. Anyone with information pertaining to this crime can contact the VCU Police Department at (804) 828-1234 or text VCUTIP to 274637 anonymously.
Good thing the students weren't armed, otherwise this might have been violent

Why would someone wait until "this afternoon" to report a robbery that occurred at 5:43am?

I think that might cause a bit of a stir... just sayin'.

It is in a way a little reassuring to see that VCU PD isn't just ignoring this like most crime alerts. Walking in to work I passed 3 officers who all looked on edge giving everyone the ol' stink eye.

As for why waiting until this afternoon to report it I suspect something related to hangover, though speculating on the how/why is pretty useless.

If one student is robbed, he/she is advised to use the Escort Service.

Here, two students were robbed. Students are advised to use the Escort Service. I see math and logic are not priorities at VCU.

The VCU Escort Service is composed of student volunteer who may (depending on availability and location of the requestor(s)'s destination) drive VCU owned and marked vehicles. If vehicles are not available or considered practicable the volunteer escorts, while wearing identifying jackets or safety vests, may merely accompany the requestor(s) to their destination. The student volunteers are, per VCU policy, unarmed with anything more useful than a flashlight and often they do not even have that with them. They may or may not have two-way radios, again depending on availability and the volunteer's ability to remember to take one with them.

In other words, the VCU Escort Service provides the possibility of additional victims and a getaway vehicle to any armed robber, and perhaps a radio tuned to the VCU Police frequency.

The presence of additional bodies may dissuade less-committed miscreants but for the truely committed they merely enlarge the potential profit of the crime.

Regarding the apparent delay between the robbery event and its being reported, I would remind folks that we are dealing with college students who have an extremely strong indoctrination in sharing their feelings, seeking possible action options from peers, and processing the pro and con consequences of any course of action before actually implementing it. That they were able to complete this process between almost 6 AM and mid-afternoon suggests they either took some shortcuts or were in fact skilled in the procedure. I support the former rather than the latter.

    stay safe.

Am I just a bit too jaded?

And here I was of the opinion that the (underage) students in question sobered up before contacting the VCU police.
