Folks,

Please mark your calendars for October 15 to help clean up a section of the West Desert in Utah County. We enjoy our deserts and enjoy shooting too and here is a great opportunity to help clean up an area that is frequented by many shooters. The area is 12.4 miles south of the Redwood road / Lehi West Main street crossroads just past Pelican Point on the west side of Utah Lake. A dumpster will be provided to deposit the garbage. This is a great way to give back to our community and also work with our local agencies. Please include your friends and families, scout troops or other organizations that would like to help. I will be posting additional information as it becomes available. Thanks and I hope that we have the opportunity to meet in person at our event.

If you have any questions or would like additional information, please feel free to post them here or send me a PM.

HELP USSC AND BLM CLEAN UP SHOOTING AREAS IN UTAH COUNTY OCTOBER 15th

An Alert next week will have complete details, or email volunteer@UtahShootingSports.com if you want to sign up now, or need more info.

USSC has invited the help and participation of BLM to get people to clean up some thoroughly trashed areas that have been used for informal shooting on the west side of Utah Lake, in Utah County. And, other people have been dumping trash there, giving shooters a bad reputation, so we need to get the areas cleaned up.

When: Saturday October 15th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Where: West side of Utah Lake on Highway 68, about 11 miles south of Saratoga Springs. "Little Cove" is located between mile marker 21 and 22.

What: Picking up all sorts of trash and loading it into dumpsters. Everything from broken glass, shot up appliances and refrigerators, paper, bushels of shotshells...trash of all types.

What to bring: work clothes, gloves, some rakes, shovels, trash pickers, trash bags or pails to haul stuff to dumpster, insect repellent, sun hat or rain gear.

Who: Volunteers willing to spend some time cleaning up places for shooters to enjoy, that includes spouses and kids of suitable ages. Show up and show BLM that shooters are willing to work for gun rights and safe places to shoot by getting our hands dirty, not just working with politicians.

A special thank you to Justin Hardy and his company Star Targets www.startargets.com ("Very" Reactive Targets) for his generous donation to USSC. He has asked that this money be used in our efforts to reclaim and restore our public lands,
USSC will also be working with the local troops of the Boy Scouts of America as well as some Utah shooting groups. If you would like your group to be included let us know. Please forward this alert along to your own groups.

FULL DETAILS IN ALERT NEXT WEEK

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- HELP CLEAN UP SHOOTING AREAS IN UTAH COUNTY OCTOBER 15TH-

BACKGROUND
One of the least appreciated threats to gun rights is the shrinking number of places to shoot. Especially places for informal "plinking" type shooting with no range fees to pay.

Utah residents have used thousands of acres of BLM or Forest Service owned land for informal shooting for years. A remote area with a safe backstop and no distractions can be a great place to teach a child, spouse or friend the basics of gun safety and marksmanship. Many of us fired our first shots in such a setting, and let's preserve that for future generations. These areas can be a great place to practice self defense tactics, or to check sights on a hunting rifle, or try out a new handload. And, it is always fun to just shoot at informal targets!

Some people (not necessarily shooters) have dumped trash at areas where people shoot, and people have shot up the junk, and others left additional trash. This ranges from minor eyesores such as cardboard or paper left to blow around, to major trash and safety hazards such as television sets, refrigerators, broken glass, etc, even junk cars.

USSC is working with the Western District BLM Office to clean up some thoroughly trashed areas that have been used for informal shooting. We are doing this not only to clean up the trash left by irresponsible people, but also to build a working relationship with the BLM office, to improve things for several shooting issues.

The remainder of this alert concerns a specific area west of Utah Lake, but USSC asks gun owners to pitch in and always leave every shooting area you use cleaner than when you arrived.

If you cannot make it to the "official" project site on October 15th, then spend some time cleaning up the area you use most often on that day, or commit to hauling out extra trash every time you go shooting, and encourage other shooters you encounter to do the same! Cleaning up shooting areas will help protect future shooting opportunities.
