The challenge was brought by GeorgiaCarry.org. The gun rights group maintains that religious institutions should be allowed to decide whether to allow firearms inside.

State lawyers counter that the ban allows worshippers to pray in safety.

Sounds like the State just made the case for plaintiffs! The religous institutions will decide what is safety to them! :D

Here in VA the law is murkier. Individuals may carry in a place of worship so long as they have "good and sufficient reason." The problem is that they don't define good and sufficient reason. Our attorney general just released an opinion that self-defense meets that standard. Seeing how his opinion does not carry the force of law, I think eventually we will need either a new law or a lawsuit similar to this one in order to settle the debate.

Interesting, we want separation between church and state until we do not want a separation between church and state.

Given that the state is mandating that one can't have a weapon in a church there currently isn't a separation between state and church. By getting the state out of the church's business you could say that they are trying to restore the separation of church and state ;)

No restriction in WA. If the congregation says, no, well it is private property. If the congregation says nothing, it is fine with the state.
