Timely Warning Notice - Oct. 10, 2011

The Radford University Police Department is investigating an assault that occurred on Oct. 9, 2011, at approximately 2:42 a.m. near Madison Hall on campus. Two victims reported that while walking across campus near Madison Hall from Tyler Avenue, they were assaulted by two black males wearing blue jeans. One suspect was wearing a black shirt and the other was wearing a white shirt. One of the victims received medical attention for injuries at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and was released.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Detective Garnett Phillips or Detective Sam Shumate of the Radford University Police Department at (540) 831-5500.

The Radford University Police Department would like to remind the community of the following:

Be aware of your surroundings and walk in groups when possible.
Report all suspicious people and circumstances immediately.
Utilize the Radford Transit system or the RUPD safety escort between points on campus.
Be cautious in confronting suspicious persons on campus—call RUPD at (540) 831-5500.

This notice was sent on behalf of the Radford University Police Department.
For more information, call (540) 831-5500.

Their escort system is through RUPD Dispatch, however, I do not know if the escort it is actually a RUPD officer or a student. I'm sure OC would have been a deterrent.

Mugging Near Tech Campus Last Week

Last Monday VT sent out several alerts about a suspect, just off campus, brandishing a gun and forcing a student to drive him to several ATMs and withdraw money. Yeah, there is absolutely no reason that anyone might need a gun in and around college towns and campuses. . .

If the police "escort" had been a student, it would haev been a bonus victim for the bad guys. Even if it was a cop they'd prolly have a go at him/her as well.
I'm sure if they had asked nicely the badguys (fulfilling negative stereotypes) would have waited for the police to show up to defend the victims.
This is why I carry my knife with me at school. Conisdering even getting a collapsable baton...maybe. Have to check the legality on that one
