NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee state lawmaker who was the lead sponsor of a law allowing handgun concealed carry permit holders to bring their guns into bars has been arrested on charges of drunken driving and possession of a gun while under the influence.

Rep. Curry Todd, a Collierville Republican, was pulled over in Nashville late Tuesday, police say in court documents. He allegedly failed a roadside sobriety test and refused to take a Breathalyzer test. A loaded .38-caliber gun was found in a holster stuffed between the driver seat and the center console.

We all make mistakes. It's important that if you're going to have more than a couple of drinks, you leave the weapon at home. You especially don't drink and drive. I have my own concerns about handguns, but I'm more of an advocate on the DUIs. Considering the latest stats show about 30 people per day die in the U.S. from an alcohol related crash, it's still a problem we're continually dealing with. I'm a DUI Instructor who teaches part-time at the state LE academy and I try to get as many off the road as I can. We have seen a recent increase in DUIs related to prescription meds and synthetics. Regardless of the intoxicant, he should have known better. He should also know that given his position in politics, he's going to be in the spotlight moreso than anyone else. Lesson learned, move on.
