HARRISON, Ark. -- A 77-year-old homeowner shot a burglar after he says the man attacked him. Boone County Sheriff Danny Hickman says Lance Milam, 33, was wounded on Sunday night.

Investigators say Milam tried to climb in a window of the home of Donald McElrea when McElrea opened a door with a pistol in his hand. Milam then fell from a 20-foot high deck.

McElrea told Milam to stay on the ground while his wife called the sheriff's office. Investigators say Milam got up and charged McElrea. McElrea fired three times, with one shot wounding Milam in the right arm.

Deputies say they found property from McElrea's shop building in Milam's vehicle. Milam is charged with theft and burglary.

Good for the homeowner!

I'm willing to bet several donut holes that Mr. McElrea did not intentionally shoot Milam in the arm. Moving targets are hard to hit and this incident offers a good example - one hit out of 3 and not a COM hit at that.

Distance from the preceived threat is your friend. Although we don't know how far apart they were it might be another safe bet that it was more than the proverbial 21 feet of the Teuller drill.

Final note: at least in this case a non-COM hit seems to have been sufficient to stop the threat. Very fortunate for Mr. McElrea that Milam was not more committed to doing him harm.

Many lessons to take away from this.

stay safe.

Several video store robberies of liquor stores indicate in the heat of battle it's difficult enough to hit center body mass at point blank range. Some of that, however, might be the result of not wanting to hit the other person at all.

In the meantime, any trained armsman wouldn't have much problem hitting someone in the arm anywhere within 20 ft, nor connecting with center body mass at 75; (25 yds).

Just some perspective...
