    What lawyer?

I have read that its a good idea to have an attorney if you are going to carry a firearm. I dont have one, not sure what is involved in getting one and sure in heck dont have any money to put one on retainer. What are you folks doing for legal representation?

I'm fairly certain I will have the help of Wisconsin Carry and the other pro gun rights groups I am a member of if I need legal representation; This is pertaining to unlawful detainment/arrest/etc. for lawful carry of a firearm when in fact I have not broken any laws.

I also have a business card in my wallet of a lawyer who represented a friend of mine from an unlawful arrest and won.

Be safe, follow all the laws (even the ones you don't agree with) and be innocent of instigation.

In my personal opinion it's more important to have the funds available for your defense rather than have a specific defense attorney to call. There are 3 options that I know of Personal Excess Liability Insurance, Home Owners Umbrella Rider, and Personal Criminal Prosecution Defense Pool. (NRA, All State, USCC) Don't assume your standard insurance will cover an at will shooting.

Besides the NRA\WCI cards I also carry a card for Umentum & Kimps and Apple Lawfirm PLLC.

I am talking about legal representation in case I have to use my firearm. In the event you have to use your firearm in self defence they said the second person (after your 911 call) should be to your attorney.

Vandil, does that firm require any form of retainer prior to representation consideration?

Both are trust litigation specialists not criminal defense attorneys. My situation is uncommon as I have granted my firearms to a non revocable gun trust that offers some additional liability protection.

You are probably not going to find an attorney who will take on a retainer relationship "in case" you need them for a criminal defense.

It seems folks are reluctant to recommend a specific attorney. So do what most other folks do - ask around at the courthouse who the bailiffs think is the best criminal defense attorney and why. Ask the cops who they would like to have defend them. Ask at your local gun stores and gun clubs. Then see how much it will cost you to sit down for about 30 minutes with the one you think you like best and ask them how they would go about defending you if you were involved in an alleged self defense shooting, and what questions they would advise you to answer before they showed up. If you like their answers get their card (several of them) and carry it, as well as putting their number in your cellphone.

Remember, when you are first arrested and want to be advised by an attorney before you say anything to the cops you may not be able to get your preferred attorney "right away". You may have to decide to sit in jail and wait till they are available or to take pot luck with the phone book.

There is a big difference in getting advice on not incriminating yourself and in being defended in a criminal trial. The best attorney for one may not be the same for the other.

In the meantime, use the search function to look up threads on the 4th and 5th amendments and talking with/to the cops. Educate yourself as much as you can both here and anywhere else where you trust the information. Search out places like Force Science Institute to see what they recommend to cops about talking with cops after an officer-involved shooting. Read what the cop forums say.

    stay safe.
