News media could be implying carrying a firearm is a bad thing... maybe?

I first want to say, I am PRO firearms and open carry. My wife... she likes the idea, but like others don't want people who are foolish to use it just because they are mad.

I was watching the local news station here in ST. Louis (channel 5 KSDK)... there where two gun related reports (both where very sad and they do need everyone prayers). First, the message was that, "Shots fired at a hospital ER room... details later on..." and "a young highschool lady has died in her livingroom from gun fire... details later on..."

What would you think? Someone who has a CCW tripped? Someone dropped a gun and it went off?

I waited for the news report at 5pm. What happen at the ER, it was over in Illionis (which bands all types of carry, no CCW etc and they call it "the land of the free"), two police officers (armed) escorted an inmate to the ER for some injuries he received in jail. Well, the inmate thought it was his chance for freedom... was able to get his hands on the officers firearm, they fought and the inmate was able to fire the gun twice. No one was hit. But the report that the gun "accidently" fired twice....yeah right. Stories like this make it seems that guns just.... "fire off". Now, I do understand that an officer may have a round in the chamber while in holstered and most carry Glocks and the "safety" is in the trigger (double trigger). But people who do not know, or even never used a firearm, wouldn't know and once again, take the word of what's being reported. Some may mentally block out the fact they where officers and focus on the idea of "no weapons such as firearms to be carried".

As for the young girl, from the report she did past away. The reported stated that she was sitting on her pourch and someone fired several shots at her way. You can even see bullet holes through the front glass window. The aunt said she came in the house saying she was shot and shortly after she died.

Once the story comes out... its more understandable... but waiting for the story causes many to wonder... what its all about or even people form their own thoughts before they hear the story. I have talked to a few people about this when I visted the local McDondals, and some comments where made that "guns should be illegal to own". And I made the comment of, if people drive and crash into other people more offten, should we make cars illegal to own? Or that more people where to commit murder in their homes, should we make owning a home illegal? As I saw...seen that people will stick with their beliefs no matter what, just because what may have happen in their past.

I just want to say, thank you all for sticking up for your rights to carry arms.

are we talking about the carrying of musical instruments? XD

This story from illinois is obviously fake because it is illegal to snatch a gun from a police officer.

If you did not notice this past summer, it got huge cold one day. It was because hell froze over and the media actually did do an almost fair job on a firearms story here in st louis. It was even an open carry story if you can believe that. Of course the morons in several munis immediately moved to ban it thanks to a very poor example of a lawyer in Paul Martin.

If you think you are going to see positive firearms stories in the media, you are mistaken, it is about a 1000 to 1 ratio on good to bad and interesting when they do a good one, they ALWAYS leave it with a question at the end.

I'm going to take your comment as a joke... of course it illegal to even touch a cop, doesn't keep a person from trying it. If its fake, then lets sue the hell out of Channel 5 for reporting it.

This is a copy;
Breese, IL (KSDK) -- An inmate fired an officer's weapon while he was being treated for medical issues at St. Joseph Hospital emergency room in Breese, Illinois.

Breese police chief Robert Fix said Dennis Parker, 25, was brought to the hospital from the jail by Clinton County Correctional Officers Sunday.

Police said the inmate struggled with the officers and grabbed the sidearm weapon of one of the officers, causing it to fire twice.

The officers were able to secure the weapon and the prisoner without further incident. He was then taken back to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office where he was being held.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Chief Fix said Parker was arrested over the weekend on outstanding warrants. He was wanted on a parole violation warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections for felony retail theft. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant in Clinton County for failing to report to jail to serve weekend sentences for a DWI.

KSDK

If this is "fake" then someone or something should be done about it.

Oh yeah I notice... I remember it probably was in June or July of this year... the report was that shots are fired at Cracker Burrel (resturant). Once the story came out... "witness" was interviewed, people where hauled off to the ER. It basically sounded like a shoot out was taken place. But what this???? NO ONE WAS SHOT. The shooting did not even take place in the resturant! It was a dispute of two older guys (he had a CCW) over a family business. Basically they got into a heated debate, they went outside, to the back of the store, from the the report, one of them pulled his weapon and used it to "make a point" by shooting into the ground. I think they where brothers...anyway. Those few shots fired made the people on the inside think it was in there. So of course he received a fine (probably lost of CCW). But it was amazing back then how the media and people made it seem like they where being shot at.

I hate... dislike the media. But in their defense... they did "explain the story" later on that night.

From what I have seen of the media recently, they love to do teasers to get people watching, then give the story (their way) then at a later, most likely when less folks are watching, fill in the gaps with the rest of the story.

This occurred when I was in Austin TX earlier this year. An individual shot someone on their property...Then the news made it sound like the homeowner randomly shot someone walking bytheir house. Turns out, it was a burgler who had tried to get in the front door and window; the HO went outside, confronted the person and shot them when the intruder started to rush the HO. This last part was provided at the 10 pm news, not the primetime slot. The info was there, they chose not to provide it until later that night. The shooting happened the day before.

Did they provide all the info, yep, but only when they wanted too.

See that's why it is fake. Inmates aren't allowed to possess firearms, (let alone discharge them)so how could he have possibly done these things? That's why we have laws to stop them.

Thanks and welcome to the forum

Thanks firedawg for your post. It was an interesting read and brought up a lot of serious food for thought.

You are right about the media hyping anything that has to do with firearms.

Glad to have you join us on the forum. :dude:

I never insulted you, I just assume the people I'm talking to are grown adults with thick skin and a sense of humor. Weren't you in the military MilProGuy?

I guess a sense of humor is hard to come by these days. Half the people I encounter on OCDO appreciate a sense of humor, the other half crawl into the fetal position and cry when they hear a joke. I don't get it. :(
