Freedom of movement being infringed in NYC

I know it's not a great source, but it is on film. Skip to 42:40 in this video and you'll see them come across a guy that wants to get to a subway station and gets denied by police on the sidewalk.

This is bad, guys. I'm surprised more NYCers aren't making a fuss about this. Freedom of movement is something Americans pride ourselves on, and this video makes it feel like I'm watching Half-Life 2 unfold.

Can any NYCers back up this video?

That is because the OWS morons declared they were going to "occupy" the subways. Blame those idiots.

Paramilitary: "Time Magazine? Show your papers over there, alright?"

Here is the tally so far in NY just from Tuesday:

Jared Malsin, on assignment for the New York Times, was charged with disorderly conduct.
Karen Matthews, reporter for The Associated Press, was charged with trespassing.
Seth Wenig, photographer for The Associated Press, was charged with trespassing.
Matthew Lysiak, reporter for the Daily News, was charged with trespassing.
Julie Walker, on assignment for National Public Radio, was charged with disorderly conduct.
Patrick Hedlund, news editor for DNAinfo.com, based out of Manhattan, was arrested.
Paul Lomax, a photojournalist on assignment for DNAinfo.com, was arrested.
Doug Higginbotham, a freelance video journalist working for TV New Zealand, said he was arrested while standing on top of a phone booth to video record.
An unidentified reporter from Vanity Fair was arrested, according to the publication.
An unidentified photographer from Agance France Presse was also arrested and transported in the same paddy wagon as Malsin, according to his report.

So the OWS has the parks and the paramilitary have the streets, sidewalks, subway, and press.

Some members of the media said they were shoved by the police. As the police approached the park they did not distinguish between protesters and members of the press, said Lindsey Christ, a reporter for NY1, a local cable news channel. “Those 20 minutes were some of the scariest of my life,” she said.

Ms. Christ said that police officers took a New York Post reporter standing near her and “threw him in a choke-hold.”

Actually the occupiers are marching through NYC now. Their stated goal is to "occupy" the subways tonight. I say let them, and seal the entrances and exits.

Regardless of one's feelings toward the OWC, they continue to expose the paramilitary for what they truly are.

And to be fair the OWC is even more anti-press/1st Amendment than the paramilitary.

No, I will personally blame the Officers(Government) who are keeping people from moving as they wish!!! To me the provocation doesn't matter, what does is how the Government responds to it !

A good 2A analogy is all the gun control we see happening, ie...someone might go crazy and shoot someone with a AK so lets ban all AK's to make sure that scenario doesn't happen, or that group of people are openly carrying weapons in a Starbucks, they could go crazy and rob the place and kill everyone in it so lets ban the carry of all weapons...etc etc etc.

What it comes down to is the government of NYC is currently engaged in violating the constitutionally protected right of freedom of movement just because a group MIGHT do something.

It is wrong no matter what the provocation.

I don't know about NewYork, but over in Milwaukee police Chief Flynn decided he was not going to do anything, but that they will not allow tents.

I can't see how the "occupy Milwaukee" neo-hippies acomplished anything by blocking traffic over the freeway at North ave, other than ******* off the working folk that were just trying to get home. I suspect that the "occupiers" are a bunch of commie D*****-bags, but I cannot comfirm that. I did notice the commie blue fist on a red backround signs.

    This.

But to be fair, I think the OWS movement isn't so much about anti-press/1A than it is anti-mainstream press that tries to portray the protesters as a bunch of jobless hippies that do nothing but incite riots and vandalize the city.

Getting back to the OP's premise that blocking access to the subway during a time when OWS was attempting to cause civil disruption equates to infringing freedom of movement --

Given that the OWS folks have a documented history of vandalizing city and private property and committing both petit and great crimes against persons, the NYPD restricted access to the subway in order to allow themseves free access to deal with the OWS folks.

Given that NYC provides multiple means of public transportation, restricting access on a temporary basis does not equate with infringing on freedom of movement. It does inconvenience people.

Given that the restriction on access to the subway was temporary in nature, it does not equate to infringing on freedom of movement.

Why is the OP not also discussing the behaviors of OWS that are attempts to usurp freedom of assembly, freedom of movement, freedom of speech, and the like that have been going on for over two months?

I am by no means trying to defend NYPD, or to condemn OWS. I'm just tired of folks like the OP labeling every action by the government as an infringement of rights. Next thing I expect to read is that fire trucks and ambulances responding to emergencies infringe on my freedom of movement because I have to move out of the way to let them pass.

    stay safe.

The St.Louis Occupy march was pretty un eventful. Only thing they wouldn't allow them too do was take over a local bridge and block it. Other than that. They were pretty much escorted, but left alone. I support freedom of speech and protest 100 even though I don't agree with them. Now, their rights stop if my rights suddenly come in too question.

Did you see that dude's eyes though? He was totally lying. He wasn't really trying to get on the subway. I couldn't tell who all they were letting threw. He knew they weren't going to let him threw. I'd say he was one of the many protesters that was milling about. He just wanted to see if he could get through the barricade so that he could say he was infringed upon.

From what I've seen, that's pretty much a fair description.
So they're objecting to the truth???

Todd, that list of reporters arrested or attacked by police is scary.

how do you know that's the truth? where did you get that information? mainstream media?

I'm not saying they haven't done it, but the OWS protesters are everywhere and so is everyone else. How do we know that vandals aren't taking advantage of the situation to discredit the protesters? We know the cops are doing it.

As a photojournalist, these are the kinds of truths I wish I could bring about. If I could be there to photograph it, I would (maybe. I've heard reports that they're arresting people taking photographs). I've been trying to find a link to a story that mentions several photos and stories that make it look like OWS is trashing the city, but the photos and stories have nothing to do with OWS, it's just NYC on a typical day.

Yea that whole OP film was staged. I get the feeling it was well known occupiers that grabbed a camera and went to have some fun fooling internet movie watchers.
Don't believe any facts that I say! This is the internet and it is filled with lies and untruth. I invite you to look up for yourself the basic facts that my arguments might be based upon. This way we can have a discussion where logic and hints on where to find information are what is brought to the forum and people look up and verify facts for themselves.
