Today I went shooting with my wife. I have some ammo from ultramax and decided to use it up. Has anyone else use this before. I noticed it smoked like i was using a black powder gun. I have never encountered anything like this. It is also very dirty. Not real happy with it.

I used Ultramax ammo at an indoor gun range when I was at school in the spring semester. It was the re manufactured lead nose type:

I was actually surprised because it was cleaner than the aluminum Blazer I'd tested before and cleaner than what I was expecting. What exactly were you shooting?

This was the 9mm ammo. My wife thought there was something wrong with here gun because it was smoking so bad. I also read other reviews that it is crap. Makes me wonder how they stay in business selling that crap.

The economy is in the dumper, and a lot of folks try to save a buck wherever they can. Hence, they buy "crap" - or almost "crap" - ammo for practice, and keep the Hornady or Speer Gold Dot for carry. Speaking of Hornady, they have recently come up with a really clever marketing scheme - "Zombie MAX" rounds! It's essentially nothing more than one of their standard JSP SD loads in a new box. Their marketing is apparently effective, because Impact Guns, in Ogden UT, can't keep it in stock - especially in 9mm. Here's what their packaging says:

Warning: This is Live Ammunition. This is not a toy.

Disclaimer: Hornady® Zombie Max™ ammunition is NOT a toy (IT IS LIVE AMMUNITION), but is intended only to be used on…ZOMBIES, also known as the living dead, undead, etc. No human being, plant, animal, vegetable or mineral should ever be shot with Hornady® Zombie Max™ ammunition. Again, we repeat, Hornady® Zombie Max™ ammunition is for use on ZOMBIES ONLY, and that's not a nickname, phrase or cute way of referring to anybody, place or thing. When we say Zombies, we mean…ZOMBIES!

 It made me smile... so I bought some! Pax...

To be honest... its not really "dirty". What you are seeing/ feeling is the stright lead rounds leaving the gun. I have used about 800 rounds of lead nose for my XD .45. I never had any problems, everyone fired and ejected as designed. IN MY OPINION... its worth buying for practice and defense.

What matters is that it works. Now, you have other rounds from different companies that promise this and that... and for the most part, you do pay for a better burning powder, etc. But when its costing you about a dollar a round... you may want to use that for defense.

I have seen the FMJ rounds costing more than Winchesters'! I love Winchesters, a much "clean" burning and less residue. BUT ANY AMMO IS GOING TOLEAVE SOMETHING. Espeaically if you are shooting several hundrad in a day.

Plus it comes down to the weapon. I have seen some 1911's won't cycle certain ammo, but through a Glock and Springfield works perfectly.

for example, that Russian ammo with the steel casing... so many people compain about it... works great in my gun... but you talk about "dirty" After 25 rounds I had so much lead and crap on my hands, shirt, face, hair... it was UNBELIEVEBLE!!!!! I wonder about my health after those shots. And I see why many ranges do not allow those rounds to be fired there.
But, if you don't mind to get "dirty", then use it for practice.

But the ultramax... if I could find it on sale... I would buy more.

Not to be funny... look through the congenticy plan from CDC and FEMA... they take "zombie" infestation seriously... so the possiblity of the "infected"/ walking dead type... is a possiblity. So in a realiity... there must be some type of "germ" that is already made or can be develop that can produce that kind of enviroment.

Hiya Firedawg! I did exactly what you suggested, and went to http://www.bt.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies_blog.asp to see just how seriously they do take the Zombie Apocalypse. I was left with the impression it was written 'tongue in cheek', to add a little humor to a rather dry but important subject - disaster preparedness. Keep in mind that it is only a blog, not an official endorsement by the CDC. As I read it, DP was the main thrust of the article, and the Zombie Apocalypse was thrown in for comic relief. That's just my reading, and it doesn't make yours wrong. (I'll have to see what my buddy the werewolf has to say about it and get back to you.) ;) Pax...

P.S. And, (since you brought it up) speaking of FEMA and contingency plans, check out this blog http://ragnarok-gil.blogspot.com/2009/08/internment-camps-for-american-citizens.html. This other one http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=292 may give you something else to be seriously concerned about... it is the US Army official website, and it deals in-part with the US Army MOS 31E - "Advanced level Internment/Resettlement Specialist" - and it says in-part: "Provide command and control, staff planning, administration/logistical services, and custody/control for the operation of an Enemy Prisoner of War/Civilian Internee (EPW/CI) camp." (color added by me for emphasis). I think that's where the "Zombies" will come from! Pax...
