Tell your congresscritter to cosponsor these bills and work to get them to the floor for a vote. This is especially important if he/she/it sits on one of these committees.

Both of these bills have virtually no possibility getting out of committee before the end of the year or this seession of congress.

As much as I agree with these two bills; the media would have a hay day with those House Members who wanted to repeal the GFSZ......unfortunately, there are too many sheep that believe what the media tells them; and since it deals with the protection of the 'children', every soccer mom would vote against the candidates who voted to repeal this law, because it keeps our chitlins safe! No question the media would spin it anti-gun. Needless to say, I don't think there will be many takers on the first one, especially ones up for relection.:banghead:

Similar to the first one, 'it's for the protection of the children'. Can you see that headline......."Congressperson (insert name) Supports Removal of Child Safety Laws". Plus, "Congressperson wants Felons to Buy guns!" In fact, IIRC, I think I saw something like this when Paul filed the bill.

Now, are these headlines accurate, nope. But we are in an election cycle and those are hot topics that won't be touched, or at least going anywhere. The media, again, would have a field day.

Seeing how close WI came to going Constitutional Carry, I think it is possible.

Form letter for your Congressmen

Dear Congressman X:

I'm writing you in the hopes you'll review and choose to sponsor and co-sign two important pieces of legislation:

H.R.2613
Latest Title: Citizens Protection Act of 2011
Sponsor: Rep Paul, Ron [TX-14] (introduced 7/21/2011) Cosponsors (None)
Latest Major Action: 8/25/2011 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement. Goal: Repeals provisions of the federal criminal code that prohibit the possession of a firearm in a school zone.

The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 was a feel-good, emotional response to Jim Brady's shooting during President Reagan's attempted assassination. It has done absolutely nothing to prevent mass school shootings such as Columbine, nor has it prevented any criminal from carrying a firearm on or within 1,000' of any school grounds.

It's effects, however, severely infringe upon our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, and makes it a federal felony to defend ourselves or our loved ones within 1000' of any school. Please see Effect (Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun-Free_School_Zones_Act_of_1990#Effect

In Colorado Springs, for example, there are 141 schools within 186.1 square miles. The GFSZA renders just over 10% of our city as non-2A territory. While 10% might not seem like a lot, the problem is that schools are widely scattered, creating, in effect, a minefield that's impossible to navigate for certainty without a military-grade computerized navigation system.

Should I ever need to defend myself within any of the 141 gun-free school zones dotting our city's landscape, I would become a felon and a prohibited person, unable to exercise my Second Amendment Rights anywhere in the country which I served as a member of the Armed Forces, for the remainder of my life.

Talk about grossly inappropriate legislation! With all due respect, Sir, this legislation is long overdue for repeal! Please support H.R.2613 to the maximum extent possible.

H.R.2615
Latest Title: Second Amendment Protection Act of 2011
Sponsor: Rep Paul, Ron [TX-14] (introduced 7/21/2011) Cosponsors (None)
Latest Major Action: 8/25/2011 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

The Second Amendment Protection Act of 2011 repeals the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and the Federal Firearms License Reform Act of 1993. Restores and revives any provisions amended or repealed by such Acts as if such Acts had not been enacted. It repeals provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and the federal criminal code distinguishing firearms used or suitable for sporting, recreational, or cultural purposes from firearms used generally. It repeals the Child Safety Lock Act of 2005 and other provisions of the federal criminal code relating to gun storage and gun safety devices.

Although I do not agree with every provision of H.R.2615, I most certainly disagree with the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, another "feel good / do-nothing" piece of knee-jerk legislation which to date has failed to prevent any handgun violence whatsoever while infringing on our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

There is something very wrong about any legislation which makes it a crime for honest, law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their loved ones against real and credible threats.

Please support these bills, Sir!

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Nice letter.

Will have to make a couple of minor modifications, 99% perfect! I hope you don't mind if I borrow it?

I would love to be wrong!
I would love for you to be as well, unfortunately history has already proven you correct.

Still, I'll be shooting off a letter to my representatives as soon as I have an opportunity. At the moment, I am far too tired and am not in the proper state of mind to write out a strong supportive letter for these two bills.
